Touch the heart
At the screening of the nearly 30-minute documentary "Da Nang Liberated," many young people from Da Nang University of Medical Technology were captivated by the simple yet authentic black-and-white footage of the historic day of March 29, 1975. The announcements of victory, the cheering crowds, the emotional embraces between liberation soldiers and civilians… all transported the audience back in time to the heroic days of the nation.
Kieu Thi Thanh Tu, a student in Pharmacy class 9C, Faculty of Pharmacy, said this was the first time she had watched a valuable documentary film with her friends. Occasionally, everyone fell silent when they saw scenes of people cheering to welcome the soldiers as they liberated the city, then scenes of ruined houses and roads riddled with bomb craters. The film, without special effects or elaborate dialogue, touched their hearts. The contrast between the joy of liberation and the consequences of war made Tu ponder the price of peace : blood, tears, and the sacrifices of countless generations.
Similarly, the Youth Union of Dong A University organized a screening of the documentary film "Commemorating 50 Years of the Liberation of Da Nang City," with the participation of over 200 students and young lecturers. Tran Hoang Em, Secretary of the Youth Union of Dong A University, said that screening the film in a quiet space without auxiliary lighting allowed viewers to fully focus on the images and better understand the meaning of the film. "When the film ended, some students sat for a long time with many emotions on their faces. That's something that textbooks or history lectures sometimes struggle to achieve – touching the hearts of young people naturally and profoundly," Hoang Em added.
Connecting the past with the present
The "One Historical Film Per Month" model, launched by the Da Nang City Youth Union in March, has been seriously implemented by affiliated youth union units with the aim of creating a beneficial political and cultural space. Film screenings are conducted flexibly during branch meetings, class activities, camps, and cultural performances.
According to Nguyen Thi Anh Thao, Deputy Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, the documentary films and historical revolutionary films were carefully selected before screening to ensure that the content effectively promoted and educated the younger generation about patriotic traditions, especially events related to Da Nang and other important historical and political events of the country. Ms. Thao hoped that participating in this model would provide an opportunity for Youth Union members and young people to review the glorious history of the nation, and also a chance to exchange ideas, discuss, and express their personal feelings. In some units, after the film screening, young people were invited to share their feelings and write messages to the older generation.
"We aim to bring history closer to young people through creative forms that suit their psychology and interests. Documentaries are an effective choice because of their visual appeal, emotional impact, and strong ability to connect with others," Thao added.
In the future, the Da Nang Youth Union hopes to collaborate with the National Archives Center, Da Nang Radio and Television Station, Da Nang Museum, and production units to enrich the collection of historical documentary films for the program. At the same time, local youth union branches are encouraged to organize interactive activities after film screenings, such as quizzes about history through images, reenacting historical figures through theatrical performances, or creating short videos recounting touching stories from the films.
It can be said that the "One Historical Film Per Month" model is gradually becoming a bridge connecting the past with the present, awakening love for the homeland in young people through visual language and emotions. From there, it sows in the hearts of the next generation seeds of faith, responsibility, and aspiration to build the homeland and the nation.
