Moscow asks NATO not to admit Ukraine, Kiev replaces Chief of General Staff

Russia has said that in any peace deal, Moscow will demand that NATO commit to not admitting Ukraine.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that in any peace agreement, Moscow would demand that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commit to not admitting Ukraine as a member and that Kiev maintain its neutrality.

“We will demand that security guarantees be included in this agreement,” Deputy Minister Grushko told Russian media outlet Izvestia. “Part of those guarantees should be Ukraine’s neutrality, the refusal of NATO member states to admit Ukraine into the alliance,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, on March 16, the Kyiv Independent reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky had replaced the Chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army, appointing Major General Andrii Hnatov - previously Deputy Chief of the General Staff - to replace Mr. Anatoly Bargilevich. The decrees were posted on the website of President Zelensky's office.

The reason for this reshuffle was not specified. Through the Telegram application, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army announced that Mr. Bargilevich had been appointed Inspector General of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

In addition, Mr. Andrii Hnatov was tasked with improving the efficiency of the command structure of the Ukrainian army, especially in the process of restructuring and deploying the corps system, as well as improving the decision-making process of President Zelensky, the supreme commander-in-chief.

Mr. Hnatov has more than 27 years of experience in the military, having served as commander of a marine brigade, commander of the "Eastern" Operational Command and the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Army.
