A farming couple in Australia's New South Wales state discovered giant "elephant" garlic bulbs (a Russian variety of garlic) in their garden, including some that weighed up to 5.05 kg.
Elephant garlic is not scientifically classified as garlic, but is more closely related to leeks. However, it still tastes and looks like garlic.
Adam and Yasmine Bonner believe the giant "elephant" garlic bulbs may have been growing in the vacant lot of their garden for six years since they opened a garlic-based medical clinic in the town of Brogo in the Bega Valley, New South Wales.
These “elephant” garlic bulbs grow in large, tightly packed clusters. The Bonners believe the best way to use these “elephant” garlics, other than cooking, is to make them into black garlic.
Australian grown garlic is an alternative to imported garlic used medicinally to treat parasitic diseases and as a heart tonic. Imported garlic must be pasteurized to reduce the risk of carrying pests and pathogens.
