At the final round of the TIMO 2024-2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad) recently held in Thailand, Vu Nguyen Hieu, a 5th grade student at Nam Viet School (HCMC), won a silver medal. This achievement was surprising because he is a student at a non-public school in HCMC.

Vu Nguyen Hieu said that his love for mathematics came to him when he was in kindergarten, when he started to get acquainted with numbers. "When the teachers introduced me to numbers, I became curious about calculations, and from there my love for mathematics grew. Every time I solved a difficult and tricky problem, I felt like I had conquered a mountain. Difficult problems always stimulated me, made me excited and wanted to challenge myself more" - Hieu expressed.

According to Vu Nguyen Hieu, he does not take any extra classes outside of school but mainly studies at school. Hieu is a boarding student so he stays at Nam Viet School from morning to afternoon and is supported by many teachers. He is also always accompanied, encouraged and motivated by his mother in the process of conquering difficult math problems.

Regarding learning methods, Hieu believes that it is important to have passion. Then, it is necessary to master the math forms and do a lot of exercises. In class, Hieu always cooperates with his friends to learn new problems; if he does not understand, he asks the teacher. Before going to class, Hieu reads the old lesson in advance. When he gets home, he spends time reviewing and practicing his problem-solving skills.

"I also study advanced materials from good math books. For each problem, I try to concentrate, ponder and find the most effective way to solve it" - Hieu revealed.

Hieu commented that math is often "difficult" for many of his peers. According to him, to overcome this, they must clearly define their learning goals. Once they have a goal, it will be easier to overcome difficulties. "When you don't understand the lesson, feel free to ask your teacher for a more detailed explanation. I believe that if you have the right approach and a spirit of learning, math will become interesting and no longer a fear" - Hieu acknowledged.

Ms. Huynh Nguyen Thanh Truc, the class's homeroom teacher, assessed Vu Nguyen Hieu as a very intelligent, hard-working and progressive student. He soon revealed a special passion for mathematics.

"What impressed me most about Hieu is not only his ability to calculate quickly and think sharply, but also his perseverance and his willingness to take on difficult problems. He is always proactive in his studies and does not hesitate to ask questions when he does not fully understand the problem. In addition, Hieu has a cooperative spirit and is willing to help his classmates and share knowledge with them," commented Ms. Truc.
