While hiking in a Tuscan forest northeast of Livorno, a member of the Livorno Paleontological Archaeological Group discovered several shiny coins in the dirt. Upon further examination and excavation, the researchers determined that the finds consisted of 175 silver Roman denarii, nearly all of which were in good condition. It is one of the few known hoards of ancient coins to be found intact.
Dr. Lorella Alderighi spent more than a year measuring, weighing and recording the coins. “This treasure trove is the savings of a soldier who hoped to build his farm,” Alderighi said. “However, it is also a sad story: The owner of the coins died before he could realize his dream with his savings.”
Alderighi believes that the hoard is most likely the treasure of a veteran who served in Rome's Social War from 91 to 88 BC and in the civil war between Sulla and the Marians from 83 to 82 BC. “This is one of the very few ancient coin hoards found intact and provides a wealth of numismatic, historical and social information,” Alderighi said.
