It is forecasted that from May 22 to 25, in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa, there is a possibility of widespread heavy rain in the North, with rainfall ranging from 100 - 250mm, in some places over 350mm.

According to Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Mai Van Khiem, some places have recorded thunderstorms and localized heavy rain with common rainfall from 100 - 200mm, some places over 300mm.

Notably, heavy rain in a few hours can reach 1-200mm (Yen Duong (Bac Can) 20h-24h/17/5 rain 195mm, Na Hang (Tuyen Quang) 21h-24h/17/5 rain 198mm, Tan Lap ( Ha Giang ) 20h-24h/17/5 rain 132mm, Quang Yen (Quang Ninh) 18h-21h/17/5 rain 150mm, Dan Tien (Thai Nguyen) 16h-19h/17/5 rain 192mm,...).

According to current forecasts, total rainfall in May 2025 may be 10-30% higher than the average of many years. This rainfall is also not significant compared to May 2024 (rain in May 2024 is 30-60% higher than the average of many years).

"What is noteworthy is the appearance of heavy rain in a short period of time. This has also happened frequently in recent years," Mr. Mai Van Khiem noted.

The Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also said that in the coming days, thunderstorms will still occur mainly in the late afternoon and at night.

Prolonged heavy rain, high risk of landslides

To proactively respond to natural disasters in the coming time, the Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued a document warning of some specific natural disaster risks to ministries, branches and localities, especially from now until the end of May. Mr. Mai Van Khiem noted some specific points:

Firstly, the weather is changing seasons, so strong thunderstorms may appear with tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong gusts of wind. These risks are not only for the Northern provinces but also for localities in the Central Highlands and the South.

Second, flash floods and landslides are constant risks. Authorities continue to warn in the coming days, especially in the northern provinces that have just experienced heavy rain, so in mountainous areas such as Bac Kan, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, etc., the soil and rocks are saturated with water, so the risk of landslides remains high. People need to be on guard against landslides to avoid causing damage to people and property.

Third, with the forecasted rain scenario as above, it is necessary to be on guard against the risk that from May 22 to 25, on the upper reaches of Thao River, Lo River and some small rivers in the North, Thanh Hoa, there is a possibility of a flood with a common flood amplitude of 2-5m.

In addition, due to the fact that heavy rains are sure to appear more and more frequently, it can cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas, and industrial zones.
