AC Milan's disastrous season

On the morning of May 19, Milan lost 1-3 to AS Roma, officially missing out on the 2025/26 European Cup.

In the penultimate round of Serie A, AC Milan had to win to keep alive their hopes of securing a place in the European Cup next season. However, Christian Pulisic and his teammates sank at Olimpico.

The humiliating defeat left the "Rossoneri" in 9th place on the rankings with 60 points, 5 points behind the Conference League ticket position, while there is only 1 match left in the season. This is the first time since the 2019/20 season that the San Siro team has been absent from all UEFA tournaments.

Previously, AC Milan had the opportunity to win a ticket to the Europa League as the Italian National Cup champion. However, they surprisingly lost to Bologna.

Meanwhile, AS Roma continue to hope to qualify for the Champions League next season. Coach Claudio Ranieri and his team have 65 points, 2 points behind 4th-placed Juventus.

Just three minutes into the game at the Olimpico, Gianluca Mancini put Roma ahead with a powerful header from Matías Soule's corner. Milan were down to 10 men by the 15th minute after Santiago Gimenez was sent off for a foul on Mancini.

Despite playing with one less man, Milan surprisingly equalized in the 34th minute. After Alex Jiménez's shot was blocked by Svilar, the ball bounced right to João Felix. The Portuguese player easily tapped the ball into the empty net.

However, the turning point came in the 68th minute, when Leandro Paredes fired a beautiful free-kick from distance, leaving goalkeeper Mike Maignan standing and watching. Towards the end of the match, as Milan pressed for an equaliser, Roma launched a sharp counter-attack and Bryan Cristante sealed the score at 3-1 with a thunderous shot from the edge of the box.

Roma fans paid tribute to coach Ranieri throughout the match. The "welder" had retired but still decided to return to rescue the "Giallorossi". From a team at risk of relegation, Roma has overcome the crisis spectacularly to compete fairly for a place in the top 4 of Serie A. After the 2024/25 season ends, Ranieri will say goodbye to AS Roma to rest.
