The Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism has just issued Decision No. 3411/QD-BVHTT&DL and 3408/QD-BVHTT&DL on announcing the National Intangible Cultural Heritage with Lai Len Dance (Bac Ly commune, Ly Nhan district) and Liem Thuan Drum Singing (Liem Thuan commune, Thanh Liem district).

Lai Len Singing and Dancing

Lai Len singing and dancing is a ritual to worship the Gods at Noi Chuoi communal house (now Noi Do village, Bac Ly commune, Ly Nhan district) during festivals and the beginning of the new year.

According to legend, Lai Len has about 30 dances and songs, but currently, members of the Lai Len Bac Ly Dance Club have only collected and practiced about 15 songs and dances. Unlike in the past, members of the club now only sing and dance to perform at the God worshiping ceremony at the village communal house on January 20, which is also the village festival.

Lai Len Bac Ly dance and singing and Trong Quan singing of Liem Thuan are recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In terms of content, Lai Len dance and singing has a dance depicting the scene of welcoming the king with royal court rituals; there is a dance depicting ancient battlefields with archery, horse riding, and sword dancing; there is a dance depicting the farewell to those who left and those who stayed during the war; there is a dance depicting the scene of the victorious army returning; there is a dance depicting the scene of a festival to celebrate the army...

Although Lai Len singing and dancing are not as smooth and profound as folk songs (because they are both difficult to sing and difficult to dance), this is a unique and distinctive traditional cultural feature left by our ancestors, only found in Noi Chuoi. Therefore, over the years, Noi Chuoi people have always strived to preserve and wish to pass on the ancient singing and dancing to the next generations.

Drum Singing of Liem Thuan Army

Born about a thousand years ago, the melodies of the military drum songs in Liem Thuan (Thanh Liem) are smooth, profound, filled with love for the homeland, love for couples, love for labor... always closely associated with the daily life of the people here.

In particular, the musical instruments used to sing the military drum are very unique, suitable for the self-composed and self-performed melody and lyrics, rustic, sincere, rich in folk music. Unlike drums made of jackfruit wood and covered with buffalo skin in other places, drums for singing the military drum in Liem Thuan are made of earthenware jars (or earthenware jars) - familiar objects in the daily life of the ancient rural people.

Lai Len Bac Ly dance and singing and Trong Quan singing of Liem Thuan are recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Singing drums on a boat in Liem Thuan commune, Thanh Liem district.

In Liem Thuan, there are two forms of singing drums: singing on land and singing on boats. However, in the past, Liem Thuan people mainly sang drums on boats because it was suitable for the vast landscape of fields and water, suitable for the fishing profession associated with the bamboo boat early in the morning...

Through the ups and downs of events, there was a time when the drum singing tunes of Liem Thuan were forgotten, gradually faded away and only a few people knew about them. In recent years, the preservation of the drum singing tune of Liem Thuan has been cared for by local authorities and those who are dedicated, passionate and love the drum singing tune.

No longer is the scene of singing and responding on bamboo boats gently drifting in the middle of the vast, wavy fields like in the past. Now, the drum singing is performed by members of the Liem Thuan drum singing club during festivals... to serve the villagers and communes. There are some changes to suit, such as singing on land but the singers still use earthenware jars as musical instruments instead of digging earthen drums like in the past.

With the recognition of Lai Len Dance and Liem Thuan Army Drum Singing, Ha Nam province now has 12 intangible cultural heritages listed in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
