US arrests suspect accused of plotting to assassinate President Joe Biden

US authorities believe this was a deliberate collision.

According to the Washington DC police agency, this driver intentionally crashed his car into a fence outside Lafayette Park on the evening of May 22 (local time, early afternoon of May 23 Vietnam time), however, no weapons were found inside the truck and no casualties were recorded after the collision.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident has been identified as Sai Varshith Kandula, 19, a resident of the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, Missouri, who graduated from Marquette High School in 2022.

ABC News, citing law enforcement sources, reported that the suspect allegedly traveled from Missouri to Dulles International Airport, then rented a truck and drove to the White House. The suspect told investigators that he wanted to take over the government and kill the President. US authorities are assessing the suspect's mental health.

The subject was arrested by the US Secret Service and faces a series of charges, including threatening to kill, kidnap or cause harm to the president, vice president or a member of their family, according to the police agency.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre shared: "President Biden is extremely relieved that no one was injured and sends his gratitude to the Secret Service and police for their extremely quick response."

Security around the White House and other federal buildings has been increased following a series of breaches and other incidents, including the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. In another incident in 2021, a vehicle struck two Capitol Police officers, killing one. The driver was taken down by police.

President Joe Biden's exact location at the time of the car crash into the White House security fence is unknown.
