Russia only supplies the US with enriched uranium, a key ingredient for civilian nuclear power generation, and Washington paid $696 million for uranium imports from Moscow, the highest value since 2002, RIA Novosti reported.
In the first half of 2023, the share of uranium imports from Russia increased by 13% to 32%, with the value increasing 2.5 times.
The US also significantly increased uranium purchases from the UK in the first half of this year, up 28% to $383 million (18% of total US imports). Imports from France jumped to $319 million (15% of total US imports), compared to $1.9 million in the same period in 2022.
In addition, Germany and Canada are also among the top 5 uranium suppliers to the US market, accounting for 13% and 11% of imports, respectively.
Previously, According to the New York Times, about a third of the enriched uranium used in the world's largest economy is imported from Russia. GHS Climate, a clean energy consultancy, claims that one in 20 homes and businesses in the US was powered by Russian uranium last year.
