In the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, Nam Nhun district planted over 411 hectares of rice, mainly high-quality varieties such as Bac Thom, Nhi Uu, Thuc Hung and some local purebred rice varieties... trusted by people thanks to their good adaptability, resistance to pests and diseases, stable yield and delicious rice quality. In Nam Cay village (Nam Hang commune), which has a long tradition of wet rice cultivation with more than 188 hectares, this crop was also a big one. On the newly harvested field, Ms. Ca Thi Hanh excitedly shared: “My family planted 5,000 square meters of fragrant northern rice. This year, the rice bloomed evenly, the grains were firm, and there were few pests or diseases. After the harvest, it is estimated that we got more than 30 quintals of rice, enough to eat all year round and can sell a part of it to the market to cover living expenses”. Sharing the joy of a good crop, Mr. Lo Van He, Nam Hang village, Nam Nhun town said: “To get high yield and high yield, my family applied an improved farming model, carefully tilled the soil, balanced fertilization and sowed properly. To achieve the above success, in 2024 - 2025, Nam Nhun district will continue to promote the implementation of the Resolution on sustainable agricultural production development associated with new rural construction. One of the key tasks is to improve the productivity and quality of key crops, including rice. Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Giap - Vice Chairman of Nam Nhun District People's Committee affirmed: "Rice is not only the main food source but also a pillar in the strategy of ensuring food security, developing household economy and building new rural areas. Therefore, the district focuses on closely directing from land preparation, supplying seeds and fertilizers to organizing training and pest control according to the instructions of the professional sector. According to the assessment of the harvested area, the rice yield is about 57 quintals/ha, this is one of the Winter-Spring rice crops that brings high productivity compared to previous years".
In addition, the district also implemented agricultural extension models such as: "Organic rice production", "Smart rice cultivation adapting to climate change", attracting a large number of farmers to participate. At the same time, it focuses on developing small irrigation systems, digging and dredging intra-field canals to ensure stable irrigation. Strengthening pest and disease forecasting, supporting materials, fertilizers and improving the capacity of commune-level agricultural extension staff.
People of Nam Nhun village, Nam Nhun town are actively harvesting the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring rice crop.
Mr. Dinh Van Xanh - Chairman of Nam Hang Commune People's Committee said: "To achieve the current results, the commune has mobilized the entire political system to participate. We assigned cadres to be in charge of the villages, closely following the fields with the people, coordinating with the District Agricultural Service Center to organize a training session on rice care techniques and disease prevention for farmers. At the same time, closely monitor the weather situation, early detect and promptly handle outbreaks of pests and diseases."
Without relying on support from the State, many households in Nam Nhun have proactively changed their production thinking towards sustainability. In Hua Bum commune, Ms. Phung Ha So is one of the typical farmers with the intensive cropping model in rice production, especially the ecological rice farming method, bringing high efficiency and productivity. This includes planting one strand, planting sparsely, water management, weeding, stirring mud and applying organic fertilizer. By following the technique, saving seeds, water and fertilizer, her family has reduced production costs and increased productivity and quality of rice.
After harvesting, the producers in Nam Nhun district milled and packaged the rice for sale at the district market and sent it to Lai Chau and Dien Bien. Customers liked the fragrant, soft rice and ordered it regularly. Thanks to this, the income of rice farmers was stable, and many households had more conditions to raise their children and buy household items.
As expected, the Winter-Spring crop in Nam Nhun will finish harvesting in mid-June 2025. In the upcoming Summer-Autumn crop, the District Department of Agriculture and Environment will coordinate with agencies, units, communes and towns to implement the crop on time. This is also the main rice crop of the year in Nam Nhun district.
