DTO - That was the main topic of the "Conference to discuss solutions for developing pangasius breeds to cope with climate change and international trade barriers" organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in coordination with the People's Committee of Dong Thap province on October 11, in Hong Ngu city. Attending the conference were Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien; Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thap province Huynh Minh Tuan; leaders of Can Tho city, An Giang city and leaders of relevant departments, branches and units.

At the conference, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Huynh Minh Tuan informed that the situation of pangasius farming in Dong Thap has been relatively stable in recent times. In 2023, the total harvested output of commercial pangasius reached 525,000 tons, the export turnover reached 629 million USD and it is estimated that in the first 9 months of 2024, the harvested output will be 485,755 tons, reaching 89.9% of the annual plan. It is estimated that by the end of the year, the pangasius farming area will be 2,630 hectares with a pangasius output of 540,000 tons.
In addition, the province has about 52 facilities for breeding pangasius fry with a broodstock of about 150,000 fish, and an annual supply of about 18 billion pangasius fry to the market. Currently, the province has 850 pangasius fry breeding facilities with an area of about 800 hectares, annually supplying about 1.3 billion pangasius fry to the market. However, currently, pangasius fry production still faces many challenges, especially from fluctuations in the export market and the negative impacts of climate change. In order for the pangasius industry to develop sustainably, Dong Thap wishes to listen to the opinions of scientists and businesses to find effective solutions to cope with these difficulties.

At the conference, scientists from institutes and schools also shared some solutions to develop more sustainable pangasius seed production such as: developing pangasius seeds that adapt to salty environments, applying technological solutions to improve productivity and quality of pangasius seeds, applying digital transformation in the pangasius production chain, investing in professional infrastructure in the pangasius seed production stage...

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien emphasized the importance of improving the quality of pangasius fingerlings to promote sustainable development of the industry. Accordingly, the Deputy Minister proposed a number of specific solutions such as: strictly managing fingerling production facilities, increasing vaccination for pangasius fingerlings, investing in infrastructure and enhancing cooperation between state management agencies, enterprises and pangasius industry associations.
