Technology absorption capacity of enterprises: 'Key to taking the lead' in new development stage

Technology 4.0 is rapidly changing production and business methods. Enterprises that are slow to update technology are at risk of leaving the market. Now, enterprises need to create new products and invest in technology absorption capacity, taking that as the "key" to take a shortcut to the new development stage.

Along with the general trend, Thua Thien Hue province’s enterprises have made progress when supported and accessed to modern technology, bringing about clear production and business efficiency. However, the current situation of small and medium enterprises, although clearly understanding the role of technology, still faces many challenges in improving their capacity when resources are still limited.

Gain market advantage by being proactive with new technology

The decisive factor for the competitiveness of localities and enterprises to exploit and effectively promote the value of local resources and potential local advantages is the effective application and transfer of science and technology.

At the Scientific Workshop in the series of activities of the Creative Startup Festival - Techfest 2024 in the North Central and Central Coast, Dr. Duong Tuan Anh - Chairman of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Business Association - said: "If businesses do not adapt quickly, take advantage of modern technology to innovate and optimize production, they will face the risk of falling behind and will find it difficult to survive."

In Thua Thien Hue province, the Provincial People's Committee supports technologies that contribute to creating strong conditions for businesses to promote production and business activities, improve productivity, quality and efficiency, and increase competitiveness in the market.

Typically, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Xuan Mai - senior advisor of the Kim Long Motor project - said that besides the Net Zero trend of green economy - circulating clean energy sources, the inevitable trend is digital transformation with digital technology, which is the digitalization of data, processes, business models and operations.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Pham Xuan Mai, the ability to absorb and transfer automation technology at Kim Long Motor is reflected in the techniques and capabilities of operators, technology in innovating processes, software, documents and organizational structure.

Typical examples of highly efficient operational automation are bus body automation with frame welding robots, frame assembly workshops with customized automatic fixtures. Or bus assembly automation with wheel mounting robots, bus body lifting systems, and complete bus assembly workshops with automatic conveyor belts.

The trend of smart factories and digital factories will create green factories for sustainable development.

In Thua Thien Hue province, many enterprises have boldly innovated in production, business and operation to adapt to the environment through technological innovation and complete automation, creating new structures and operations for production such as Dong Lam Cement Factory, Thua Thien Hue Water Supply Company, Scavi Hue...

For example, the water supply sector of Thua Thien Hue Water Supply Company is currently applying the SCADA system to improve the capacity of management, production and supply of clean water, quality management and water consumption, operation, and machinery and equipment.

Or in the garment sector, Scavi Hue Company, Hue Textile Company and many other textile companies in industrial parks in the province proactively invested in more modern machinery and production lines, and built plans to improve product quality, meeting the increasing demands of partners.

To do that, the supporting policy mechanism plays a decisive role in creating an "opening path": from resolutions on supporting the innovation ecosystem in the province, supporting innovation, technology transfer, intellectual property development to competitions, the Startup Capital project constantly creates conditions and encourages businesses to renew themselves.

With many bright spots, in 2023, Thua Thien Hue achieved the local innovation PII index ranked 2nd in the North Central and Central Coast regions, and 14th nationwide.

Challenges and opportunities

Dr. Duong Tuan Anh - Chairman of the Thua Thien Hue Province Business Association - said that the results of technological innovation of enterprises nationwide in general and in the province in particular still have many issues of concern. According to some recent survey data, only nearly 23% of surveyed enterprises have technological innovation and improvement activities.

“We see the reason as limited investment capital, while the financial mechanism to support businesses in borrowing capital, loan guarantees and other support is not really flexible enough for businesses to innovate technology. Organizations that act as intermediaries and services in the technology market to connect technology supply and demand are still limited,” said Mr. Duong Tuan Anh.

Enterprises, mainly medium and micro-sized, use outdated technology and are not proactive in accessing technology, leading to labor productivity being too low compared to other countries in the region. They often face financial difficulties and weak human resources, creating obstacles in capital recovery and reducing production and business efficiency.

Concerned about enhancing the technology absorption capacity of enterprises, Dr. Ho Thang - Director of the Department of Science and Technology - commented: "Many enterprises, especially start-ups, lack production land. Without production land, how can we dare to invest in modern technological equipment...".

With 6,000 operating enterprises, small and medium enterprises account for over 90% of productivity, the quality of production and business activities is not high due to limited technological potential, which limits enterprises' lack of capital to invest in innovation and improvement of technology and equipment.

Dr. Ho Thang also talked about the technological level of large enterprises and FDI enterprises proactively investing in advanced technology, automatically locking production stages, and certifying compliance with international standards.

Meanwhile, small and medium enterprises, cooperatives, and traditional occupations are still using outdated technology, low productivity, and causing great environmental pollution.

While large enterprises and FDI enterprises (textiles, alcohol, sesame candy, seafood) export goods to difficult markets such as the EU, US, and Japan, small and medium enterprises are still mainly consuming domestically.

Thereby, the Department of Technology Development and Innovation recommends continuing to strengthen coordination with the Department of Science and Technology of Thua Thien Hue in improving the level and technological capacity of enterprises and intermediary organizations, and officials participating in application, transfer, and innovation activities. At the North Central and Central Coast Creative Startup Festival - Techfest 2024, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh - Permanent Vice Chairman of Thua Thien Hue Provincial People's Committee expressed his hope that Thua Thien Hue will be a destination to attract creative startup resources, a place for domestic and international businesses to start up.

“The innovative startup ecosystem in Thua Thien Hue province will grow stronger and stronger, and together with Da Nang city, build a model of a national startup and innovation center, becoming a major center of the country in science and technology,” Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh emphasized.

In the period of 2019 - 2024, Thua Thien Hue will carry out 14 national-level science and technology tasks; carry out a series of rural mountainous projects with the application of scientific and technological advances and the transfer of many technological processes into production models; build and manage the development of Hue geographical indications for Thanh Tra and Hoang Mai products... changing the appearance of many products with the Hue brand.

Thua Thien Hue develops and supports 9 Science and Technology projects from Resolution 22/2020/ND-HDND on developing intellectual property, standards, and quality measurement to improve technology mastery capacity, receiving 163 dossiers from organizations and individuals. Organizes appraisal or gives opinions on technology for 24 investment projects in economic zones and industrial parks in the area.

Currently, Thua Thien Hue province has established 5 science and technology enterprises, put into operation a technology trading floor and a technology supply and demand connection point at the Center for Application of Science and Technology Advances. Many science and technology programs, plans and tasks are linked to the value chain, creating added value, improving the quality and quantity of science and technology goods supply in the market.
