Napoli are set to return to the market for Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window.

Coach Antonio Conte believes the young English midfielder can continue the revival journey of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Højlund, two former Manchester United players who are shining in Serie A.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport , Napoli were interested in Mainoo in the summer but failed to reach an agreement. Now, as he continues to fall out of favour under Ruben Amorim, the southern Italian club are ready to “try again”. Since the start of the season, the 20-year-old has played just 138 minutes in the Premier League, mostly as a substitute.

Mainoo once asked to leave MU on loan but was rejected. Meanwhile, Conte is in need of midfield personnel as Kevin De Bruyne is seriously injured, Stanislav Lobotka has not recovered and Frank Zambo Anguissa is about to participate in the CAN Cup with Cameroon.

Napoli see Mainoo as a long-term solution, helping rejuvenate a squad that relies on key players approaching their thirties. He will be joining a competitive environment where McTominay won the Serie A Player of the Year award last season, while Højlund has scored four goals in seven games.

However, former player Rio Ferdinand warned MU not to lose Mainoo: "I don't want to see Mainoo wearing any other shirt other than Manchester United and England."

If he arrives in Naples, Kobbie Mainoo could be the next name to be awakened by Antonio Conte - like he did with McTominay and Højlund.
