"Everyone knows clearly that yesterday's events around Makhachkala airport were largely the result of external interference, including information influence from abroad," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 30.
Mr. Peskov said that with what is happening in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, "bad guys can easily take advantage of the situation to provoke and incite."
On October 29, hundreds of protesters stormed Makhachkala airport after a regular flight from Tel Aviv (Israel) arrived amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a video circulating on social media, protesters smashed glass doors and stormed the airport. A group “interrogated” several people at the airport terminal to determine whether they were Jewish. Protesters also approached planes that had just landed, trying to get inside.
The chaos left more than 20 people injured, including police. Makhachkala airport was temporarily closed.
Russian police took control of the airport and detained 60 people, the Russian Interior Ministry said.
Dagestan authorities said the situation was under control, all passengers at the airport were safe and the airport was expected to resume operations tomorrow.
The incident comes as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate after more than three weeks. The fighting has killed more than 8,000 people in the Gaza Strip and more than 1,400 in Palestine.
Russia has repeatedly called on all sides to cease fire and sit at the negotiating table to find a political and diplomatic solution to the current crisis to avoid civilian casualties. However, Moscow's draft resolution at the United Nations was not adopted.
