The North and Central regions are about to welcome a cold front causing heavy rain and strong thunderstorms, ending a series of hot and humid days that have lasted over a wide area. Today (May 9) is forecast to be the last hot day of this period.

Around May 10, cold air affected some places in the mountainous region of the Northeast. Around the evening and night of May 10, the cold air strengthened, affecting other places in the Northeast, then the North Central, the Northwest and some places in the Central Central region.

From the night of May 10, the weather in the North and North Central regions will turn cool, while some mountainous areas in the North will be cold. The lowest temperature during this cold spell in the North and North Central regions will generally be 20-23°C, while in the highlands, some places will be below 18°C.

Under the influence of cold air compressing the low pressure trough, in the evening and night of May 9, the North and Thanh Hoa will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms. The rain will help cool down significantly after days of hot weather, but it also poses a risk of natural disasters due to heavy rainfall concentrated in a short period of time.

From the afternoon and night of the same day, the plains and midlands of the North will also experience moderate rain, heavy rain, locally very heavy rain and thunderstorms with greater intensity, with rainfall ranging from 30-70mm, with some places experiencing over 150mm.

In the North Central region, from the afternoon of May 10 to the morning of May 11, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain, locally very heavy rain and thunderstorms, with forecasted rainfall ranging from 30-70mm, with some places over 150mm.

It is noteworthy that these heavy rains occurred in a short period of time, with rainfall reaching over 80mm in just 6 hours. This increases the risk of extreme weather events such as flooding in low-lying areas, urban areas and industrial zones; flash floods on small rivers and streams; and landslides on steep hillsides.

During thunderstorms there is a possibility of extreme weather events such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds.

From May 11, heavy rain in the areas tends to decrease.
