In Bom Bo hamlet, Binh Minh commune, Bu Dang district, Binh Phuoc province, the traditional brocade weaving profession has been preserved by the Stieng ethnic group for generations.
During the resistance war against the US to save the country, the Stieng people here not only sheltered, sheltered, and provided food, but also wove brocade and made fabric to sew clothes and blankets for the soldiers. Recently, Binh Phuoc province coordinated with other units to organize the art fashion program "New Day on Bom Bo village", lighting up the colors of brocade, Traditional culture on legendary land.
At the Stieng Ethnic Cultural Reserve in Bom Bo, a joyful atmosphere spread throughout the mountains and forests of Bom Bo. From the elderly to the children, everyone joined in the common joy when witnessing the ethnic culture being honored. The program raised the sound of gongs and t'rungs echoing in the heart of Bom Bo, soaring high into the sky like an invitation, signaling, awakening the traditional cultural values that are sleeping in the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Facing the large stage of nearly 1,000 square meters in the conservation area, warm yellow lights shine down on the Stieng ethnic artisans, reflecting the silhouettes of their hands gracefully weaving. Those artisans are Stieng women, they sit at rustic looms, their hands quickly moving shuttles to weave colorful brocades. Each thread is skillfully twisted and interwoven, creating sophisticated patterns, bearing the cultural mark of their people.
Ms. Dao Thi Hoai Ngoc (born in 2001, in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province) participated in the program and shared: “Although performing on stage in front of thousands of spectators, it seems that Stieng women will be nervous and embarrassed, but as soon as they pick up the raw fabric, they immediately become absorbed in their familiar work, as if telling stories about life and the traditions of their homeland. When the brocades gradually appear under the talented hands of the artisans, I feel like they carry their souls and love for the weaving profession. Each needle and thread contains meticulousness, skill and dedication, contributing to preserving and promoting the unique cultural values of the Stieng people”.
In a space imbued with national identity, the collection of 70 brocade costumes woven by the mothers and sisters of the Stieng ethnic group, along with 250 unique designs by designer Minh Hanh, brilliantly displayed on the catwalk, painting a unique cultural picture of the Stieng and M'nong people.
The costumes are decorated with many meticulous patterns and color combinations to create a wild and mysterious look. Shapes, people, birds, animals, trees, flowers and many other patterns are shown in each small square, balanced and woven into each costume. The main colors of the collection include: Black symbolizing the earth, red symbolizing the sun and green of grass, flowers and leaves, creating a harmonious contrast, expressing both optimism and love of life, and recalling the rustic beauty of the Central Highlands mountains and forests.
Each brocade costume on the catwalk is also a vivid portrait, clearly depicting the beauty, temperament and life rhythm of Stieng women through each stage of life. For young people, with bright colors, embroidered with curved and attractive patterns like a young girl in love. As for women and mothers, the main color is dark, the solid lines of the patterns express contemplation of life. Notably, the brocade motifs appearing on the traditional ao dai create highlights, highlighting the graceful and elegant beauty of Vietnamese women.
Designer Minh Hanh, the program's general director, shared: "The essential thing is to support Stieng brocade, to bring the Stieng people's belief into brocade so that Stieng brocade can have a new life. We need to be responsible for creating the breath of the times in brocade. Modernizing but still preserving the spirit of all regions, because those spirits are the heritage values of the regions."
"New Day on Bom Bo Hamlet" also made a special impression with the performance of professional models and the participation of local people. Ms. My Trang, a Stieng ethnic from Tho Son Commune, Bu Dang District, was one of the people chosen to perform. Although nervous, her eyes sparkled with joy and her smile was radiant. Every step, every gesture exuded a rustic, genuine beauty, along with pride when introducing the traditional beauty of her homeland to a large audience. "The first time standing on a big stage, although nervous, seeing my ethnic costumes introduced to many people, I was extremely proud, giving me more confidence to perform," Ms. My Trang shared.
Comrade Dieu Ha Hong Ly, Vice Chairman of the People's Council of Bu Dang district expressed: "The program is a gratitude, an effort to give S'tieng brocade a new life, making brocade not only a heritage but also a product of high economic and cultural value. Thereby, helping brocade weaving as well as other traditional crafts find a direction, truly becoming a livelihood for people to stick with, preserve and develop".
