According to the World Health Organization, in Vietnam, tobacco use causes more than 100,000 deaths each year. The economic loss caused by tobacco is estimated at 108 trillion VND per year (equivalent to 1.14% of GDP). This figure is 5 times larger than the contribution of tobacco tax revenue to the national budget.

In Nghe An province, more than 10% of adults still smoke, of which men account for more than 21%. The rate of passive smoking at home is nearly 24.2%, at work is 17.1%. More worryingly, the use of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products tends to increase among young people (15-24 years old), posing an urgent need to protect future generations from the sophisticated marketing tricks of the tobacco industry.

In 2025, the World Health Organization has chosen the theme “Exposing the Allure of the False”. This theme is a strong warning about the sophisticated and misleading marketing tactics of the tobacco industry – especially with new products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products that are infiltrating and preying on the curiosity and show-off mentality of teenagers.

Launching the National No Tobacco Week from May 25 to 31 and responding to World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2025, comrade Tran Minh Tue - Deputy Standing Committee of the Provincial Steering Committee for Tobacco Harm Prevention and Control, Deputy Director of Nghe An Department of Health called on: All levels, sectors and localities to continue to include tobacco harm prevention and control in annual plans and internal regulations, while strengthening inspection and strictly handling violations of the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention and Control; stepping up propaganda with a focus on exposing the truth about new tobacco products - electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
