During hot weather, people in the mountainous areas of Nghe An province choose to plant rice at night under lamps to avoid the sun, instead of planting during the day as they used to.
This is considered one of the effective solutions chosen by most farmers in the highlands as a proactive and creative response to the severe drought that has been widespread recently. This method not only helps to ensure timely planting and avoid sun damage but also promotes better rice growth.
Ms. Lo Thi Huong, from Lung village, Tam Thai commune, Tuong Duong district, said: “In recent days, the weather has been hot and sunny for an extended period, maintaining high temperatures. To keep up with the planting season, not only our family but many other families in the village have gone to the fields at night to transplant rice seedlings. During the day, we take advantage of the time to pull up seedlings, and in the evening we have dinner early so that we can start transplanting around 5 PM, and return home around 10-11 PM.”
Not far from Ms. Huong's family's rice field is the rice field of Ms. Luong Thi Oanh's family. Ms. Oanh shared: "With the hot weather like the past few days, if we go to plant rice during the day, we can only plant for about 2 hours before we have to go home."
Because of the intense heat, my family chose to plant rice at night, as the weather is much cooler then, resulting in higher efficiency. Not only that, it also helps the rice grow better and ensures better health.”
"Due to the dwindling workforce as young people move north and south to work in factories, and with the busy planting season, many families have had to hire extra laborers. Many people take advantage of the time after their own farming work is finished to work as hired rice planters to earn extra income," added Ms. Oanh.
Mr. Quang Van Thuy, from Lung village, Tam Thai commune, shared that his family goes to the fields as soon as dusk falls, and they rest around 11 PM. During the harvest season, the weather is hot and sunny, so their daily routines are disrupted.
It's not just his family; most farmers in the village and commune choose to plant at night to avoid the heat. Planting at night avoids the heat, allows water to arrive in time, and the seedlings develop better, root faster, and are fresher because the water and mud have cooled down...
It is known that not only farmers in Tam Thai commune but also many farmers in other localities in Tuong Duong district go to the fields at night to plant rice seedlings, such as in Thach Giam town, Tam Dinh commune, Tam Quang commune, etc.
With the positive and proactive spirit of the highland farmers, this year's summer-autumn crop in Tuong Duong district will ensure production proceeds according to plan, creating a foundation for a bountiful harvest.
