Nghe An strives to overcome flash flood consequences

In the western districts of Nghe An, heavy rains brought high floodwaters, sweeping away and burying houses and property. Grassroots forces including commune and village officials and border guards worked all night to help people overcome the consequences.

On the morning of May 30, Mr. Lu Van Cuong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Tri Le Commune, Que Phong District said, "From last night to this morning, heavy rains accompanied by rising floodwaters swept through the commune, causing severe damage to many households, crops, houses, and livestock. The main damage was in Lam Hop village. Commune and village officials and forces including border guards, police, and military are working with the people to clean up and overcome the consequences" - Mr. Lu Van Cuong said.

Preliminary statistics show that the floods caused severe damage to houses and property of 5 households in Lam Hop village; 1 household in Pa Khom village is currently isolated due to landslides. In addition, many areas of crops, trees, livestock and roads in Lam Hop village were also severely damaged.

Since the night of May 29, the police, military, and Tri Le Border Guard Station have sent officers and soldiers to the flood-hit area to both warn and help people avoid damage. On the morning of May 30, the forces continued to join the people in clearing trees, clearing houses, and clearing blocked roads due to landslides, fallen trees, and swept away materials. Some inter-village roads are temporarily closed. At the same time, the forces are also working to clear the road to Pa Khom village to help temporarily isolated households.

Also due to the impact of rain and flash floods, the villages in Nhon Mai commune were also severely damaged. National Highway 16 to Nhon Mai commune was severely eroded, completely cutting off traffic. Many residential areas have not been accessible to assess the specific damage due to the eroded roads.

Huu Khuong Primary School was also affected, with many classrooms and furniture swept away by floodwaters. At this time, students are out of school, and teachers, local authorities and armed forces are cleaning up and moving furniture to higher, safer places.

The Provincial Border Guard Command said that immediately after the disaster occurred, Tri Le Border Guard Station mobilized 15 officers and soldiers to vulnerable areas to help people overcome the consequences, and at the same time support the evacuation of people and property to safety. At Nhon Mai Border Guard Station, heavy rain on the night of May 29 also caused flash floods. According to a quick report, there were no human casualties, however, a 3-room house of a local resident was swept away by the flood, and many areas of crops and rice were flooded.

National Highway 16 through Xoi Voi and Tham Tham villages suffered serious landslides, making it impossible for cars and motorbikes to pass. Nhon Mai Border Guard Station sent 25 officers and soldiers to the area, coordinating with local authorities to help people overcome the consequences, inspect, review, count the damage and deploy measures to ensure people's safety.

Similarly, in Ky Son district, local forces also took action that night to help people in areas affected by floods and landslides to ensure their lives and limit damage to property.

In My Ly commune (Ky Son), the leader of the People's Committee of the commune said that in My Ly commune, due to heavy rain, which lasted from the night of May 29 to the morning of May 30, some houses in Hoa Ly and Pieng Vai villages suffered landslides and rocks and soil flowing into their houses. On the morning of May 30, 2025, the Party Committee and the People's Committee of My Ly commune mobilized commune officials and My Ly commune police, along with mobile militia, local militia, and My Ly Border Guard Station to help people overcome the consequences.

Specifically, Mr. Cu Ba Song's house in Pieng Vai village was severely damaged, and the forces are working with human resources to repair it. In Keng Du commune, Mr. Xong Ba Dai's house in Huoi Le village was also affected, damaged and uninhabitable. In Huoi Tu commune, the most severely affected was Mr. Xong Nhia Dai's house in Huoi Le village, which was damaged by landslides from top to bottom, crushing his house and causing over 80% damage.

In Dinh Son 1 village, Huu Kiem commune, a bridge was washed away, affecting 7 households and 37 people. In Bao Thang commune, water levels in streams and creeks rose, and many road sections were at risk of major landslides.

In Chieu Luu commune, traffic from the commune to the district center was temporarily isolated due to high water levels at the spillways at La Ngan, Xieng Thu, and Xop Thap villages. The Na Loi village bypass was also seriously eroded. The Khe Tam bridge to Doc May and Keng Du communes had high water levels, posing a danger to people traveling through.

In the communes of Ky Son, there has also been a lot of damage caused by the floods. The local government has mobilized the “4 on-site” force and the people to work day and night to overcome the consequences, temporarily blocking some roads due to the risk of further landslides.
