Traditional opera artist Le Huu Lap passes away: A life devoted to traditional theater

The traditional art world was shocked to bid farewell to veteran hát bội artist Lê Hữu Lập (real name Nguyễn Hữu Lập – alias Châu Ngọc Quang – born in 1943) – who is considered a living treasure of hát bội and tuong co art.

He breathed his last at 4:00 a.m. on April 28, at the age of 83, leaving deep sorrow in the hearts of the audience and colleagues who love the art of hát bội.

Born in 1943 into a family of three generations of opera artists, artist Le Huu Lap, affectionately known as "Ut Teo", began his stage career at the age of 12 under the guidance of his father, artist Le Phuoc Hoai - a famous opera director in the South. With a solid foundation from his family, combined with a strong passion, artist Le Huu Lap soon asserted his talent through excellent roles in the genres of martial arts actors, general actors and clown actors.

During more than 60 years of being attached to the stage, artist Le Huu Lap has been present in many large and small troupes from Saigon to the Western provinces, contributing to creating glorious periods for Southern opera.

Classic roles such as: Phan Dinh Cong, On Dinh, Trinh An (play "San Hau") or Duong Thai Tong (play "Phan Le Hue") were performed with great spirit, touching the hearts of many generations of audiences.

Not only outstanding on stage, he is also a great figure in the field of research and composition of traditional opera. The legacy that artist Le Huu Lap left behind includes more than 500 opera scripts, hundreds of ancient books, and many valuable documents about ancient operas, elaborately systematizing the way of drawing faces and creating opera characters.

He is the bridge between the old generation of artists and today's generation of artists, the one who has silently kept alive a national art form that is facing many challenges in modern times.

Despite his advanced age, artist Le Huu Lap is still persistent in his acting career. He regularly participates in performances at cultural festivals and village festivals throughout the South, tirelessly conveying traditional artistic values ​​to the public.

The image of him quietly packing his backpack of costumes and traveling on buses to distant localities will forever be a beautiful symbol of his devotion to folk art.

When mentioning artist Le Huu Lap, colleagues and students all have deep respect for him. Meritorious Artist Ngoc Khanh emotionally expressed: "Artist Le Huu Lap is a talented artist and a devoted teacher, an elder brother who wholeheartedly passes on his profession to the younger generation, he lives for the art of hát bội. His dedication has greatly contributed to preserving the soul of national culture. He and I have many memories, especially performing together for delegations researching hát bội, exchanging with young audiences and international tourists to promote the traditional art of Vietnamese theater".

Before passing away, he wished to donate all his valuable documents to Thang Tam communal house (Vung Tau), which preserves the quintessence of traditional art. This is a living proof of his lifelong wish to "eat the ancestors' rice, live for the profession".

The passing of artist Le Huu Lap is a great loss to the Vietnamese opera and classical drama scene. A rare talent has quietly ended his journey, but his spiritual legacy and lasting contributions will forever resonate in the hearts of those who love traditional arts.

The junior artists expressed their emotions, because for more than 60 years of "eating the rice of the ancestors", artist Le Huu Lap devoted his whole life to the art of traditional opera, leaving behind hundreds of classic roles, more than 500 scripts and a treasure trove of valuable knowledge about traditional opera. He passed away, leaving behind endless sorrow for his family, friends, colleagues and those who love traditional art. He devoted his whole life to preserving and passing on the flame of traditional opera to future generations. Although he has left this world, the sound of the drums, the resounding singing, the classic roles and his steadfast heart for the profession will forever remain in the hearts of those who remain.

The funeral of artist Le Huu Lap was held at his private home: Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Ward 8, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Funeral ceremony at 6am on May 1st, then cremation at Binh Hung Hoa.
