Star naturalized for 60 billion VND receives rare privileges in Indonesia

On February 9 (Vietnam time), the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) announced the successful naturalization of striker Ole Romeny to serve in the matches in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia.

Normally, Indonesian naturalized players must return to their home country to take the oath of citizenship. However, due to his schedule with Oxford United in the English First Division, Romeny was given priority to take the oath of citizenship in the land of fog instead of returning to Indonesia.

Romeny was given priority over many other stars of the Indonesian team. Many players more famous than him, playing for bigger teams, still had to travel to Indonesia by private plane and then back to Europe just to take the oath of citizenship.

Ole Romeny was a promising talent in Indonesian football in the past. He played for the Netherlands U15 and U18 but did not have the opportunity to go further. Ole's grandmother was born in 1923 in Medan, Indonesia, so his naturalization process was smooth, lasting only 3 months.

Romeny was born in 2000 and plays as a striker/right winger. In the first half of the season, he played for Utrecht in the Dutch national championship, scoring 2 goals in 13 matches. In January 2025, Oxford United bought Romeny for 2 million euros (equivalent to 56 billion VND). He has only played 3 matches and has not scored.

Thus, Romeny's presence will make the Indonesian team's attack more crowded. They can call up all 26 naturalized players in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The chances of playing for native players like Marselino Ferdinan, Hokky Caraka or Witan Sulaeman are even less. It is difficult for them to compete with their superior colleagues on the field.

" Hopefully, the presence of Ole Romeny in the team will help the team's attack become sharper and can bring positive impacts in the future, " said Mr. Erick Thohir - President of PSSI.
