Since the beginning of August, Quang Tri fishermen have been excited when their boats dock with holds full of anchovies, the main seafood of this fishing season.
On the morning of August 3, at Nam Cua Viet fishing port (Nam Cua Viet commune), the buying and selling atmosphere was bustling from early morning. Traders, stevedores and local people were busy purchasing and transporting fresh fish to markets and processing plants.
Anchovies are graded and sold for 9,000 - 15,000 VND/kg depending on quality. With an output of 3 - 4 tons per trip, many boats earn 30 - 40 million VND.
Fisherman Nguyen Thanh (46 years old, living in Cua Viet commune) shared: "This year, there are more anchovies coming in. There are times when I go out at night and catch 4 tons of fish. But sometimes, due to bad weather, my boat only catches less than 2 tons and I have to sell them to traders at sea."
Not only fishermen, but also drying kilns and distribution facilities have a good harvest.
"This year's anchovies are fresh, beautiful, and easy to sell. We have to go to the port early to collect goods to bring to the market," an excited trader said.
Mr. Le Van Thong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Cua Viet Commune - added: "Over the past three days, local fishermen have caught about 25 - 30 tons of anchovies each day. The output has increased sharply compared to the same period in previous years."
Most of these fish come from trawlers and scoopers in waters 15 - 20 nautical miles from Con Co Island.
Many fishermen expect this year's fishing season to last longer, making up for the stormy months at the end of the year.
