Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung (left) stays up late and wakes up early to sell nut milk to earn money for charity.
Ms. Dung used to be a skilled tailor, with over 30 years of experience sewing clothes and training students at home. About 15 years ago, while participating in contributing to the construction of a local pagoda, she realized the great happiness of sharing with others. Since then, doing charity work has become an indispensable part of her life.
Due to health problems, more than 10 years ago, Ms. Dung quit her sewing job and switched to cooking and selling nut milk. Every day, she wakes up at 3:30 am to cook soy milk, green bean milk, black bean milk, etc. As soon as dawn breaks, she pushes her cart around the center of Vi Thuy commune, then comes back at noon to busily prepare the next day's batch of milk.
Every day, she sells about 80 packs of milk, earning about 200,000 VND. She spends most of that money to help people in need. “When I know where there are people in difficult circumstances, I send money to help. One day when I went to sell and saw people in such difficult circumstances, I supported them with all the capital and profit,” Ms. Dung shared.
It is difficult to count the amount of money Ms. Dung has helped the poor. For her, she helps whoever needs it; sometimes the profit is not enough, she uses the rent to make up for it. In especially difficult circumstances, she also mobilizes philanthropists to join hands to support. She is also willing to donate to build and repair houses, support people in areas of natural disasters, floods...
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Danh in area 8, Vi Tan ward ( Can Tho city), said: "My parents are seriously ill, the family is in a difficult situation. Whenever an incident occurs, Ms. Dung always helps with several hundred thousand dong, sometimes up to a million dong. Thanks to Ms. Dung's timely support, the family has partly overcome adversity."
With her kind heart and many years of volunteering, Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung was elected as the Chairwoman of the Volunteers Club for humanitarian work in Vi Thuy district (old). She was also honored to receive the "For the humanitarian cause" Medal from the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the "For the happiness of the blind" Medal from the Vietnam Blind Association.
Recently, she was elected as a member of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vi Thuy commune for the 2025-2030 term, marking a new turning point in her volunteer journey. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhu Kieu, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vi Thuy commune, although busy with business, with local volunteer work, Ms. Dung is always ready to be present, devoting her enthusiasm and dedication to helping those in difficult circumstances, deserving to be a typical example, contributing to ensuring social security in the commune.
For Ms. Dung, trading is not only a way to earn a living, but also a way to sow seeds of kindness. Each early morning, the nut milk cart still rolls out, carrying the warmth of love, contributing to protecting and giving more faith to the less fortunate.
