The only general in Vietnamese history to be promoted to general both domestically and internationally was Major General Nguyen Son.
According to the People's Army newspaper, he was born in 1908 into a farmer and merchant family from Kieu Ky village, Gia Lam ( Hanoi ), with the birth name Vu Nguyen Bac.
In the list of generals of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, only Major General Hong Thuy - Nguyen Son's Chinese name - is a foreign national.
He participated in the Guangzhou Uprising and the Long March of the Chinese Red Army. In August 1945, after China won the war against Japan, he returned to Vietnam and directly participated in the war against France.
In 1948, he was awarded the rank of Major General of the Vietnam People's Army by President Ho Chi Minh . A few years later, he was awarded the rank of Major General by the Chinese Government.
Throughout his revolutionary career, Major General Nguyen Son made great contributions to both the Vietnamese and Chinese revolutions.

In October 1950, Nguyen Son returned to China.
