At the final round of the Startup Ideas Competition 2025 organized by Van Lang University (Binh Thanh District) on June 8, the SELF project -Educational application for autistic children won the first prize, worth 20 million VND.
Student group wins first prize with startup project related to autistic children
SELF is an interactive educational app for children on the autism spectrum with an intellectual age of 4 to 12 years old, working on smartphones and tablets.
The application was researched by a group of students from Van Lang University including Ly Tan Loc, Tran Nhat Khoi, Tran Phuong Trinh, Do Bao Loc, and Vien Thi Thanh Truc.
The application simulates everyday life situations such as greeting, queuing, waiting for your turn, sharing toys... in the form of vivid role-playing games, helping children learn naturally and happily.
"The highlight of SELF is its personalization ability: thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the application can adjust the content, interaction and learning progress based on each child's individual abilities and interests. The ability to respond positively" - team leader Tan Loc said.
The entire content of SELF is developed under the professional advice of psychologists and special education experts, to ensure scientific , safe application and suitability to the child's developmental characteristics. In addition, SELF also provides an electronic contact book, helping parents easily monitor their child's learning progress, thereby providing timely support at home.
The female student wishes to accompany children on the autism spectrum on the journey of developing social and communication skills. SELF is not only a technological product, but also a trusted companion for children in the process of learning and growing up.

Second prize went to the project “O-Leather – Bio-leather from orange peel” by a group of students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics , third prize went to the project “Anti-shock goods from water hyacinth” by a group of students from Van Lang University and the project “Building a diverse and professional ecosystem for families and children” by a group of students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, Hoa Sen, Van Lang.
Associate Professor - Dr. Tran Thi My Dieu, Principal of Van Lang University, emphasized that this is a playground for students to evaluate their own abilities with the goal of not only being the champion title but also a personal breakthrough. With the support and dedicated guidance from mentors, teachers, and teammates, this is an opportunity for students to acquire more knowledge values as well as the entrepreneurial spirit of the previous generation.
This year's competition recorded positive growth with 71 startup projects from 270 students from more than 20 universities and colleges nationwide, an increase of 18% compared to the previous season.
The projects focus on developing startup ideas that are associated with long-term value for the community and the environment, exploiting urgent issues such as sustainable agriculture, green education, creative recycling, and applying artificial intelligence (AI) in mental health care.
