(CPV) - Vietnam's number 1 female badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh reached a new milestone in her career when she rose to 26th place for the first time in the Badminton World Federation rankings.
On the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings announced today (July 11), Vietnam's No. 1 badminton player Nguyen Thuy Linh rose 3 places, from 29th to 26th. This is also the highest ranking in the career that the 1997-born player from Phu Tho has achieved.
The new achievement was achieved thanks to Thuy Linh's impressive performance in the women's singles event of the 2023 Canada Open (part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 system). The Vietnamese athlete eliminated defending champion Michelle Li to advance to the quarterfinals. Despite losing to the tournament's number 1 seed, Akane Yamaguchi, in the quarterfinals, Nguyen Thuy Linh still accumulated an additional 5,040 bonus points. Thanks to that, the number 1 badminton player of Vietnam has a total of 39,690 points, moving up to 26th place in the world.
Participating in international tournaments helps Nguyen Thuy Linh seek opportunities to participate in higher level tournaments such as the world championship and the Olympics. She is one of the representatives of Vietnamese badminton participating in the 19th ASIAD in September in Hangzhou (China).
Ranked 26th in the world is something no Vietnamese female tennis player has ever achieved in history. Two years ago, Thuy Linh surpassed Vu Thi Trang to become the number 1 female tennis player in Vietnam and she continues to climb the BWF rankings.
Thuy Linh will continue to compete in the 2023 US Open (Super 300) this week with the mission of reaching the quarterfinals (3850 points) to defend her score at the 2022 Singapore Open (3600 points). In this tournament, Thuy Linh is selected as the 7th seed in the women's singles and will face a player who passed the qualifying round (not yet determined)./.
