Writer struggles to make a living to pursue his passion for writing

Writers, who silently weave words to beautify people's souls, often face very ordinary difficulties. Making a living and passion become two fronts that they have to fight side by side.

During the introduction of the novel “Meeting in the Middle of the World” by author Thu Hang, Doctor of Linguistics Do Anh Vu frankly shared a reality: “Many poets and writers cannot live on royalties so they have to do other jobs, but they still love literature and pursue it to the end”. This is not an individual’s situation.

From young writers just starting out to experienced authors, most have to struggle and make a living with many different jobs to nurture their passion for writing.

Speaker Nguyen Quoc Vuong.

The story of Master-Speaker Nguyen Quoc Vuong is a clear example. As a former teacher who studied abroad in Japan, he not only wrote nearly 100 books but also traveled across the country to promote reading.

He confided: “I am happy because I write, I pass on my passion for reading to everyone, and I do meaningful work for society. For me, life like that is very meaningful.” This sincere sharing shows one thing: For many writers, happiness does not come from money but from spreading knowledge, faith and human values.

Author Thu Hang – the author of the profound love novel “Gập lại trong đường nhân thế” – has confided that writing stories helped her overcome depression. For her, literature is not only a passion, but also a spiritual therapy. Words become a bridge between her and life, a glimmer of light in the dark days.

The truth is, to complete a literary work, the writer must spend months, even years, pondering, writing and rewriting, and editing every little detail. However, the income from royalties in Vietnam is not enough to ensure a stable life.

Many writers have to take on additional jobs such as teaching, translating, journalism, scriptwriting or even doing business to make ends meet. Meanwhile, the demand for reading literary books among Vietnamese people, especially young people, is still quite limited, making the literary book market narrower than ever.

However, writers do not give up. They live with each page, each character as if they were living another life. Literature for them is a career, a calling that cannot be refused. They may not be famous, not rich, but they are the ones who keep the fire – a smoldering but persistent fire – to preserve the beauty of language and the depth of the Vietnamese soul.

So, if one day you come across a little-known book that contains sincere and profound emotions, remember that behind it is a person who has tirelessly lived – and written – with all his passion. Because literature, though quiet, is always an inexhaustible source of humanity.
