The alleged altercation occurred at a Dania Beach hotel on May 3, before Fred Kerley was set to compete in the Grand Slam Track Tournament. According to an arrest report from the Broward County Sheriff's Office, Kerley, 29, was charged with "assault or battery."
Kerley later appeared in court and posted $1,000 bail. Grand Slam Track also confirmed in a statement: "Fred Kerley was arrested last night. The incident is under active investigation. Fred will not compete this weekend. We have no further comment at this time."
Kerley has won three gold medals at the World Athletics Championships, including a gold in the 100m in 2022. He also won a silver and a bronze in the 100m at the last two Olympics.
Johnson (28 years old) is a hurdler, she represented the US at the 2024 Paris Olympics but only finished 7th overall. She also participated in the Grand Slam Track and met Kerley in the hotel hallway.
Johnson accused Kerley of punching her in the face, causing her nose to bleed. Officers noted Johnson's injuries were "consistent with her account."
