Duc Giang General Hospital ( Hanoi ) recently admitted a 42-year-old male patient to the emergency room with severe left chest pain. Prior to this, the patient was on his way to work when he suddenly experienced intense left chest pain radiating to his left arm, accompanied by shortness of breath and sweating, so he went to the hospital on his own for emergency treatment.
At the Emergency Department of Duc Giang General Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction within the first hour, with a high risk of dangerous complications (ventricular arrhythmias, cardiac arrest) occurring immediately. Given this emergency situation, specialists from the emergency department, cardiology (cardiovascular intervention team), and intensive care and toxicology unit quickly consulted to develop a treatment plan.
Thirty minutes after admission, the patient underwent percutaneous coronary angiography. The results showed a thrombus completely occluding the anterior interventricular artery (the main artery supplying blood to the myocardium). The patient underwent thrombectomy, angioplasty, and placement of three stents to restore the natural blood flow of the damaged coronary artery system. After 5 days of treatment, the patient's condition stabilized, and they were discharged.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Head of the Cardiology Department at Duc Giang General Hospital, said that the patient arrived at the medical facility very promptly when there were dangerous warning signs of coronary artery disease (severe chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating). Without timely emergency treatment, the patient could have suddenly suffered cardiac arrest.
Dr. Thang noted that coronary artery disease, especially acute myocardial infarction, is showing signs of affecting younger people more and more. If you experience symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath, you should quickly go to a medical facility to be examined and treated early by cardiovascular specialists to avoid potentially dangerous complications.
In particular, Dr. Thang noted that patients should quit smoking cigarettes and pipe tobacco if they are currently smoking. The aforementioned patient has a history of regularly smoking 2 packs of cigarettes per day.
Smoking is a risk factor.
Cardiologists at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi advise that smoking is one of the risk factors for myocardial infarction (heart attack). Nicotine and other harmful substances in cigarettes can cause coronary artery blockage, increase blood pressure, and impair myocardial function. Treating risk factors for myocardial infarction (hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and other cardiovascular diseases) is also crucial to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
It is necessary to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure, and controlling blood sugar. If you have related medical conditions, you should adhere to the diet and exercise schedule prescribed by your doctor; and use medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, etc., as prescribed by your doctor.
