Leisure talk: I see love on the road

I often travel on the highways around the city. On weekends, the traffic seems to double, the bus stops are crowded and bustling.

People take the opportunity to escape the heat, to relax after a week of being wrapped up in a tight schedule. The white and yellow signboards of the cars stop at the rest stops one after another. Not only to satisfy their temporary needs, but also to have a few short moments of relaxation, watching people passing by.

For some reason, I like to observe places like this. Each person, each family seems to have a different story. And sometimes, just by looking at the way people help each other out of the car, I can imagine the warmth and coldness of the relationship behind it.

The other day, it was an old lady in a wheelchair, but her hair and clothes were neat. A woman, probably her daughter, gently pushed the wheelchair, carefully asking: "What would you like to drink, cold water or hot tea, Mom?". They did not make any noise, just quietly walked by, like a gentle breeze. Then behind was a little girl, about ten years old, carrying a bag of cakes, trotting over and stuffing a small bag of milk into her hand: "This is delicious, Grandma!". I suddenly felt my heart soften.

Another time, I came across a three-generation family having a snack around a plastic table. The grandfather sat at the head of the table, the parents in the middle, and the two teenagers at the back. No one was looking at their phones. They were passing around a box of sticky rice with beans, a piece of pork sausage, and a bag of washed fruit. There was something warm and joyful about it amidst the constant noise of vehicles coming and going.

I once traveled abroad with a middle-aged woman who was traveling with her father. The father could barely walk fast, and walked very slowly, but she still patiently helped him up each step, held his hand when crossing the street, reminded him to drink water, peel apples, peel tangerines... Without a word of urging. Once, when the group was sightseeing, I saw her standing still for a long time, just to take a satisfactory photo of her father in front of the gate of an ancient temple. She said: "He has never been abroad before, so take the opportunity to take him out for a bit, so that we won't have any regrets later...".

There was also a time, at Vung Tau beach, I met a young man, his arms were covered with tattoos, he spoke in a casual manner, seemingly indifferent. But then I saw him gently scoop water to wash his mother’s feet in front of the hotel door, then carefully wipe every tiny stain on her glasses. It turns out that children who love their mothers, not all of them talk well, but sometimes just need to do it silently.

You will probably be like me, slightly moved by those images filled with love. The journey may not be comfortable, the food may not suit your taste, the sleeping quarters may be cramped… but it still brings people closer together. It is grandparents who get to see a new world . It is parents who get to relax a little in the hustle and bustle. It is children who learn to slow down and care for others. Trips are often not about how many sights you can see, but about capturing every moment with your loved ones.

Time passed quietly and quickly. I stopped the car again at the familiar highway station and saw an old man holding a package of cakes walking towards his wife. They were probably close to seventy. She asked: "What kind of cake is this?" He replied: "The kind you usually eat, they're still sold now!" A simple statement, but it made me feel moved.

People say, while you still can, choose to take a long trip together. Because, the roads will never be traveled again. The world is really big, but if there is no one to share the journey with, all the beautiful scenery will just pass by. Every stop on the road of life is an opportunity for love to come closer. Let's take it together, while we still have time.
