Previously, the area around Ham Thuan Lake was inhabited by the K'ho ethnic minority. They lived in the valley, along the riverbanks. When the government decided to dam the river for hydroelectric power, the people there moved to new settlements in the commune.
The upstream of Ham Thuan Lake originates from the La Nga River. The lake covers approximately 2,500 hectares, with eight small islands scattered across its surface. The lake plays a crucial role in regulating the climate and providing water for production and irrigation in the surrounding area. Therefore, it is often referred to as a miniature "Ha Long Bay".
With its peaceful natural surroundings, the clear blue of the lake's water, and the surrounding hills and trees, Ham Thuan Lake is a cool, green oasis in the heart of this sunny, windy region. Locals have utilized the islands to cultivate fruit trees. Thanks to abundant water and nutrients, the trees are always lush and bear fruit.
The peaceful and picturesque beauty of Ham Thuan Lake has led to the development of numerous recreational activities, attracting many tourists to visit and explore .
Mr. Mai Van Minh, a business owner in Da Tro village, La Da commune, who is often asked by tourists to guide them on tours around the lake, shared: "The Ham Thuan Lake area has a climate similar to Da Lat, so tourists from both within and outside the province like to come here. Initially, it was just a few small groups, families coming together, then word spread, and gradually, this area is becoming increasingly bustling. It's busiest during holidays, Tet (Lunar New Year), and the summer months."

The people living in the villages around Ham Thuan Lake are simple yet incredibly friendly and hospitable, so visitors will be warmly and thoughtfully welcomed. Floating on a small boat on Ham Thuan Lake, enjoying the gentle breeze and the rustling of nature, will give you a truly wonderful feeling. Besides tour groups of 30-50 people, many families combine their trips with group tours , each group consisting of 3-5 families. Visiting Hoa Qua Son Island, tourists will be guided to experience fishing, and explore fruit orchards with a variety of fruits such as durian, macadamia, avocado, mangosteen, and wild rambutan…
As the sun began to set, tents were pitched around the glowing campfire. Under the vast yet warm atmosphere, together with friends and family, they enjoyed delicious food freshly harvested from the lake, such as needlefish, catfish, goby, green prawns, shrimp, or wild lettuce (or watercress) and dandelion, prepared into dishes with authentic local flavors.
Mr. Phan Xuan Sat, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his feelings: “As soon as I arrived here, I felt the fresh, airy atmosphere. The most enjoyable part was strolling through the fruit orchards, picking and enjoying the fruit right there. At night, sipping a hot cup of tea in the cool mountain air, all fatigue and stress disappeared.”
The lush green islands on Ham Thuan Lake are creating a highlight for tourism in the southeastern part of Lam Dong province, making the sea-forest-lake tourism route even more attractive. For adventurous travelers, this destination is certainly hard to miss.
