The Vietnamese Women's Publishing House has just introduced to readers the novel "The Clan Chief", the latest work of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Long. Set in a familiar Northern village, "The Clan Chief" tells the story of a family, which is also a typical picture of rural Vietnam. Not following the traditional novel structure, the author chose a simple and coherent way of telling. The interwoven storylines, the characters appear naturally, full of life like the breath of everyday life in the countryside.
Through many generations of characters, the work depicts the historical journey of a rural area from the time of village and hamlet establishment, through two resistance wars against the French and the Americans, to modern times. The story of the Vo family in the book reflects the contradictions and movements of rural society: conflicts between the old and new generations, between preserving traditions and the desire for change; competition within the family, the negative aspects of local management, and changes in ethics and lifestyle.

From everyday details, the author raises a profound question: although the Vietnamese countryside today is richer and more modern, can it still retain its ancient character? Because the struggle between good and evil, between old and new, between preservation and loss, never ends.
Not only a story about a family, "The Clan Leader" is also a reflection on people, society, and the changes of Vietnamese villages in the flow of modernization. Amidst the myriad of changes, the author still devotes emotional pages to memories of his homeland: the gentle lifestyle, the moss-covered beauty of ancient villages, the way of life of the Northern people, and the passionate love for the land and people at the "roots".
Critic Nguyen Thanh commented in the epilogue: “Among countless stories about clans and patriarchs intertwined with village and human stories, The Clan Leader evokes in readers, especially the middle-aged and elderly, nostalgia for 'the old days', while also opening up thoughts for young people about their origins, human morality and today's world affairs.”
With an experienced and contemplative writing style, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Long continues to affirm his writing ability through a profound and humane work, where reality and memory blend in pages filled with human love.
