At a press conference on May 5, Dennis Barnes (16 years old, student at New Orleans International High School, USA) announced that he will pursue a degree in Computer Science at Cornell University (an Ivy League school, USA).

"I want to express my deep gratitude for the support from my high school, professors and family. I have decided to attend Cornell University, majoring in Computer Science, with a future in software development," Barnes said.

In late April, Banres made headlines when he received acceptance letters from 125 schools, with a total of more than $9 million in scholarships. However, according to CBS News , since then, the total number of scholarships Banres has received has surpassed $10 million , with acceptance letters from at least 188 schools.

Despite having many options, Barnes said he decided to attend Cornell University as soon as he got the acceptance notice. According to the student, Cornell University is the best Ivy League school for engineering. In addition, Barnes also wanted to leave his hometown of New Orleans to come to New York and experience new things.

The male student did not disclose the amount of scholarship he received from Cornell University, only saying he was very satisfied with the school's offer.

The International High School of New Orleans said Barnes' total scholarship award is a record, breaking the previous record of $9.4 million held by student Normandie Cormier.

In 2019, when preparing to graduate from Early College Academy (Lafayette, USA), Cormier received nearly $9 million in scholarships from nearly 140 schools. This number later increased to $9.4 million .

New Orleans International High School is now in contact with Guinness to confirm Barnes' record.

According to WWL-TV , Barnes will graduate from high school at the end of May. He is also currently taking college credits at Southern University in New Orleans. Barnes credits his faith, prioritizing his education, and focusing on his goals as the keys to his success.

"As teenagers, we get distracted a lot. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think whenever you set your mind to something, you find a way to get it done, and your dreams and aspirations come true," Barnes said.
