Japan Enacts First Law on Safe Artificial Intelligence

A task force headed by Japan's prime minister will be set up to decide the country's AI policy, with guidelines to be drawn up for businesses and individual users.

On May 28, the Japanese parliament enacted its first law to promote the safe use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, addressing concerns about risks such as the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

The law allows the government to require businesses to cooperate in investigations into misuse of AI but does not impose any penalties.

Governments can advise businesses on misuse of AI and warn citizens when such cases are detected.

Japan's new AI law reflects efforts to enact global AI regulation, with the European Union (EU) enacting comprehensive legislation by 2024.
