On May 28, the Japanese parliament enacted its first law to promote the safe use and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, addressing concerns about risks such as the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
The law allows the government to require businesses to cooperate in investigations into misuse of AI but does not impose any penalties.
Governments can advise businesses on misuse of AI and warn citizens when such cases are detected.
Japan's new AI law reflects efforts to enact global AI regulation, with the European Union (EU) enacting comprehensive legislation by 2024.
A task force headed by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will be established to decide Japan's AI policy with guidelines to be compiled for businesses and individual users./.
