According to Osaka Prefectural Police, the 30-year-old suspect confessed to stealing the toxic compound in an attempt to kill his father. However, he said he did not use it and threw it away. Police have yet to find the stolen poison.
Osaka City University announced on May 16 that a bottle of potassium cyanide and a bottle of sodium cyanide, enough to poison and kill between 160 and 250 people, had disappeared from its laboratory. The university filed a theft report with Osaka police.
