Japan issues e-visas for Vietnamese tourists traveling in groups

The Embassy of Japan in Vietnam announced that from November 1, 2023, it will issue e-visas to Vietnamese tourists traveling on tours operated by designated travel companies.

The announcement stated that the issuance of e-visas will begin after the preparation work is completed, one by one, from among the travel companies designated to organize package tours.

Applicable visa types are: Single entry short-term visa for tourism purposes within 15 days (Limited to Vietnamese passport holders residing in Vietnam).

Visa applicants must present at the airport a “Visa issuance notice” displayed on their mobile phone screen (Internet connection required). PDF, screenshot or printed hard copy is not accepted.

According to data from the Japan Tourism Agency, Vietnamese visitors were among the 10 largest tourist markets to the country in the first 8 months of 2023.

In August 2023 alone, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 50,000, an increase of 16.5% compared to the same period in 2019 (compared to before the pandemic). In the first 8 months, Japan welcomed 397,000 Vietnamese visitors, an increase of 17.4% compared to the same period in 2019. With this number of visitors, Vietnam ranked 7th among the 10 largest markets sending visitors to Japan, after South Korea, mainland China, Taiwan (China), Hong Kong (China), Thailand, the US and above the Philippines, Australia, and Singapore.

On the other hand, Japanese visitors to Vietnam reached about 414,000 in the first 9 months of 2023, ranking 5th in the top largest international tourist markets, but decreased by about 50% compared to the pre-pandemic period - 2019.

Japan is one of 13 countries that Vietnam exempts from visas (unilaterally) along with Korea, Italy, Germany, France... From August 15, 2023, Vietnam officially applies new visa policies, Japanese tourists coming to Vietnam will be unilaterally exempted from visas and the temporary stay period will be extended to 45 days.

Along with that, the flight route between Vietnam and Japan has recovered to the level before the Covid-19 pandemic, the frequency of flights has also increased to facilitate travel for tourists. Along with that, the number of Vietnamese tourists coming to Japan and having the need to travel to Japan tends to increase rapidly and Vietnamese tourists have the highest spending level in this country.
