Kagoshima Prefecture, famous for its Wagyu Kuroge cattle and one of the three prefectures with the largest Wagyu cattle population in Japan (over 350,000 head), is looking to boost sales in the Vietnamese market.
During a market promotion trip to Ho Chi Minh City in late November 2024, Ms. Erena Ikoma, Deputy Technical Director and Head of Livestock Promotion at the Kagoshima Government Meat Export Federation Office, stated that Vietnam is one of the markets the locality has chosen as a promotion destination this year, following Taiwan and the United States.
According to statistics, Vietnam's imports of Wagyu beef have increased from 2 tons per year 10 years ago to 39 tons this year. However, this figure is still modest compared to the region.
Ms. Ikoma emphasized: "We see great potential in Vietnam, a market with many customers willing to spend on premium products to elevate their culinary experience."
In 2022, Wagyu Kuroge cattle from Kagoshima Prefecture achieved great success at the Wagyu Olympics – a prestigious world -class event held every five years with rigorous criteria for meat quality, marbling, and care. The prefecture's beef proudly topped six out of nine categories at the most recent competition, solidifying its reputation as a leading breed of high-quality cattle in Japan.

Currently, there are 99 certified Wagyu beef stores worldwide, including two in Vietnam. All stores selling Wagyu from Kagoshima are certified with stringent standards, ensuring customers can identify and be confident in the product's quality.
According to Ms. Lam Thi Hoang Truc, representative of Phan Thanh Akuruhi Company, one of the two distributors of Wagyu Kuroge beef in Vietnam, the main consumption channel for this premium product is through restaurants and hotels.
Wagyu beef is currently sold at supermarkets in Vietnam for between 2 and 5 million VND per kilogram. However, beyond being just a food item, Wagyu beef is also chosen by Vietnamese customers as a luxurious gift, symbolizing health. Recently, Wagyu beef has appeared in many Vietnamese dishes such as beef pho, salads, and sashimi, making this ingredient more popular.
In addition to expanding its distribution channels, Kagoshima Prefecture also aims to organize more promotional events to introduce not only Wagyu beef but also other agricultural and seafood products to Vietnamese consumers, such as Kojika Shochu liquor, amberjack, and Japanese red snapper.
