Counting vehicles on some bridges, intersections, and important routes of the capital using specialized vehicles shows that many roads are 6-8 times overloaded compared to the design.

According to the Hanoi Department of Transport, the traffic volume on the elevated Ring Road 3 and Thanh Tri Bridge is 8 times higher than the design; vehicles passing through Chuong Duong Bridge are 8 times higher; Le Van Luong - To Huu Street is 1.1 to 1.7 times higher...

In particular, Nguyen Trai Street with a length of about 3.4 km (starting point at the foot of Nga Tu So overpass - ending point connecting with Tran Phu Street, Ha Dong) - one of the main traffic axes of the capital has a traffic density exceeding 3.3-5.6 times during rush hour.

This is a vital route in the southwest of the capital, connecting with National Highway 6 to Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien , but currently there are some points fenced off to construct the Yen Xa wastewater plant project, making traffic even more difficult.

The Department of Transport said that the number of traffic jams in Hanoi in 2023 decreased by 4, from 37 to 33. The department handled 15 traffic jams during the year but 11 new traffic jams arose. The reasons were the increase in the number of personal vehicles, slow investment in traffic infrastructure, limited resources, and traffic overload on traffic infrastructure.

The leaders of the Department of Transport warned that from now until the Lunar New Year, traffic will be complicated because in addition to the people of the capital, people from neighboring provinces will also flock to Hanoi. Therefore, in addition to counting vehicles and using simulation software to organize traffic scientifically , the Department also coordinates with related units to arrange forces to guide, operate, and minimize congestion. Every week, the Director of the Department will chair a meeting with working groups on traffic situations to listen to emerging situations and propose solutions.

According to statistics from the Department of Transport, Hanoi has over 8 million registered vehicles, including 1.1 million cars, more than 6.7 million motorbikes, 200,000 electric bicycles, not to mention 1.2 million vehicles from other provinces and cities circulating in the area. Meanwhile, the land ratio for traffic in the city is only 12-13% (according to the plan, it must be at least 20-26%); static traffic is less than 1% (according to the plan, it must be 3-4%).
