TPO - The 2018 General Education Program stipulates that from the 2022-2023 school year, Informatics will become a compulsory subject taught starting from grade 3. However, in Thanh Hoa , the current shortage of facilities and human resources is hindering the effective teaching of this subject.
According to records, Binh Luong Primary and Secondary School in Nhu Xuan district (Thanh Hoa province) currently has 517 students across both levels. To support the teaching of Information Technology, the school has one computer lab with 10 computers. However, after a period of use, 3 computers have broken down, and the repair costs are high, so temporarily, students can only use 7 computers for their lessons.
Because the school has two levels of education, the primary school is separated from the secondary school, and the primary school has two additional separate campuses in different locations (the furthest campus is 8km from the main campus). Meanwhile, the subject classrooms are located in the secondary school, making it difficult for primary school students to conduct practical computer science lessons.

Mr. Le Ba Tam, an official from the Education and Training Department of Nhu Xuan district, said: “The district currently has 6 schools at two different levels in two different areas, resulting in only one area having functional rooms while the other does not. Although the school is nominally equipped with all the necessary functional rooms, in reality, it is still lacking, causing difficulties in teaching and learning practical lessons.”
Like many other localities in the province, Nhu Xuan still lacks IT teachers. Therefore, the Department of Education and Training has arranged for Math and Computer Science teachers, and Physics and Computer Science teachers to teach IT; and has transferred teachers across schools and grades to ensure that students from grade 3 onwards can learn IT as required by the 2018 General Education Program. At the same time, the IT subject schedule has been arranged to include IT in the same session at the same school to ensure convenient travel and teaching conditions for IT teachers.
Meanwhile, Mr. Phan Truong Thi, Deputy Principal of Phu Loc Primary School in Hau Loc district, shared: “The school has a computer lab with 20 computers, but only about 50% are working. Besides that, the school doesn't have a dedicated computer science teacher, and the teachers are assigned to teach at other schools, so professional activities are somewhat lacking in proactiveness.”
Currently, many schools face difficulties due to a lack of resources for modern computer labs, forcing them to use old, low-configuration, slow computers with outdated operating systems, and a shortage of skilled IT teachers. Consequently, the quality of teaching and learning in IT remains challenging. According to many IT teachers, in addition to increasing the number of IT teachers in schools lacking them, teachers also need regular training and professional development to update their knowledge.
