Rice demand from Asian markets decreases, businesses actively shift market direction

A trader in Ho Chi Minh City said that due to weakening demand from traditional Asian markets, some exporters have started to shift to African markets such as Ghana and Ivory Coast.

In the domestic market, according to the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Agriculture and Environment, in Can Tho, Jasmine rice is still priced at VND8,400/kg, the same as last week; IR 5451 rice is VND6,200/kg; ST25 is VND9,400/kg; OM 18 is VND6,600/kg.

In Dong Thap , IR 50404 rice costs 6,600 VND/kg, OM 6976 is 7,400 VND/kg. In Vinh Long, IR 50404 rice costs 6,600 VND/kg.

In An Giang, prices of most fresh rice varieties remained stable compared to last week, IR 50404 was purchased at 5,200-5,300 VND/kg, an increase of 100 VND/kg; OM 5451 from 5,200-5,300 VND/kg; OM 18 at 5,600-5,700 VND/kg; Dai Thom 8 from 5,600-5,700 VND/kg.

Currently, farmers in Dong Thap province are harvesting the autumn-winter rice crop, but the price is low, and farmers are not making a profit. In Tan Hoa commune, Dong Thap province, traders buy Dai Thom 8 rice variety at 5,500 VND/kg, a decrease of about 500-1,000 VND/kg compared to the previous autumn-winter crop. With the above price, farmers can only sell each hectare of rice for 20 million VND, which is considered a break-even point for those who farm at home, while those who rent fields are at a loss. Not only are the prices low, but the yield of autumn-winter rice this year in Dong Thap is also low.

In An Giang's retail market, rice prices are stable: regular rice 11,000-12,000 VND/kg; Thai fragrant rice 20,000-22,000 VND/kg; Jasmine 16,000-18,000 VND/kg; white rice 16,000 VND/kg, Nang Hoa 21,000 VND/kg, Huong Lai 22,000 VND/kg, Taiwanese fragrant rice 20,000 VND/kg, Soc Thuong 17,000 VND/kg, Soc Thai 20,000 VND/kg, Japanese rice 22,000 VND/kg.

The price of IR 50404 raw rice remains at 7,550 - 7,650 VND/kg, IR 504 finished rice is from 9,500 - 9,700 VND/kg; OM 380 raw rice is from 7,200 - 7,300 VND/kg; OM 380 finished rice fluctuates at 8,800 - 9,000 VND/kg.

Regarding by-products, the price of by-products of all kinds fluctuates between 7,400 - 10,000 VND/kg; fragrant rice bran increased by 50 VND/kg, fluctuating at 7,450 - 7,550 VND/kg. The price of dry bran is at 9,000 - 10,000 VND/kg.

In the Asian rice market, Thai rice prices jumped last week, with 5% broken rice being offered at $370 per ton, up $30 from last week and the highest price since July 31.

A Bangkok-based trader said the main reason was flood damage in some production areas. Thai rice also received support from news of rice sales to China and a stronger baht.

In contrast to Thailand, Indian rice prices fell on weak demand and the rupee traded near record lows. The country’s 5% broken parboiled rice was quoted at $348-$356 a tonne, down from $352-$360 last week. The country’s 5% broken white rice prices also fell to $345-$350 a tonne from $350-$355 last week.

A Mumbai-based exporter said the rice market is very competitive. A weaker rupee is allowing Indian exporters to lower their prices to attract buyers.

In the US grain market, vibrant export demand has been the main driving force behind the US grain market this past week.

At the close of trading on November 28, corn futures on the Chicago Board of Trade rose 2.5 cents to $4.4775 a bushel. Soybean futures also rose 6.25 cents to $11.3775 a bushel, while wheat futures fell slightly by 2 cents to $5.385 a bushel. (1 bushel of wheat/soybean = 27.2 kg; 1 bushel of corn = 25.4 kg)

For the week, US corn and soybean prices increased by 2.3% and 1.1% respectively, while wheat prices decreased by 0.2%.

This session, US corn futures prices at times hit their highest level since early June after the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed large orders. Specifically, the USDA's daily report showed that exporters sold 273,988 tons of corn to unnamed customers and 312,000 tons of soybeans to China. These contracts are all delivered in the 2025-2026 crop year.

The USDA also reported 2.8 million tonnes of US corn export sales for the 2025-2026 marketing year and 571,500 tonnes for the 2026-2027 marketing year for the week ending October 16, far exceeding the results of a Reuters poll. Arlan Suderman, chief economist at investment brokerage StoneX, said that while the data was old and delayed due to the government shutdown, US corn sales during that period were still extremely impressive.

The market is still closely watching China’s soybean demand after the US and China reached a trade truce in late October. The situation gained further attention when Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry said China had banned imports from five of its soybean exporters – a development that could open up more opportunities for US agricultural products.

In the world market, coffee prices on both major exchanges also recorded positive signals. In London, Robusta prices for January 2026 delivery increased by 26 USD to 4,565 USD/ton. In New York, Arabica prices for December 2025 delivery also increased by 1.50 cents, reaching 413.00 cents/lb (1 lb = 0.45 kg).

In the domestic market, coffee prices in the Central Highlands increased slightly and are currently trading around an average of 112,000 VND/kg. Specifically, prices in Dak Lak reached 112,300 VND/kg, while in Lam Dong and Gia Lai, prices were recorded at 111,300 - 112,500 VND/kg and 111,900 VND/kg, respectively.
