Braised pork, dried shrimp, dried fish, pickled cabbage, fried banh chung, soft drinks, and coffee are foods that should not be consumed with alcohol during Tet.

Tet is a time for families to gather, reunite, and enjoy delicious food. Master, Doctor Doan Vinh Binh, Medical Information Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that there are many foods and drinks that should be avoided when drinking alcohol.

Salty foods: Braised pork, dried shrimp, dried fish, and dried squid often make you thirsty, which increases your alcohol consumption. The high salt content in salty foods can also have a negative impact on your stomach.

Spicy or sour foods : Consuming too much pickled cabbage, pickled onions, pickled garlic, and kimchi increases the harmful effects of alcohol on the digestive system, irritates the stomach lining, and aggravates gastroesophageal reflux. Therefore, the combination of alcohol and spicy or sour foods can easily lead to heartburn, indigestion, or gastroduodenal ulcers.

Fried foods with a lot of oil: Combining banh chung, banh tet fried in oil, Chinese sausage, braised pork belly... with beer and alcohol causes the body to produce enzymes that promote fat absorption, causing increased blood fat, fatty liver, and cardiovascular disease.

Caffeinated drinks such as energy drinks, soft drinks, coffee : Caffeine can inhibit the effects of alcohol, making the drinker feel alert. As a result, they may drink more alcohol, increasing the risk of alcohol-related harm. Foods containing caffeine can also damage the lining of the digestive tract, aggravating stomach problems. Mixing alcohol and caffeine is not safe.

Alcohol, beer in general, especially wine, contains a lot of tannin, which hinders the digestion of iron-rich foods such as beef, soybeans, white beans, red beans, black beans, lentils... People with a history of iron deficiency anemia should not consume drinks with these foods.

Dr. Binh said that before drinking alcohol, you can eat foods rich in protein and electrolytes such as eggs, bananas, salmon, melon, avocado... to help control hunger, balance electrolytes and reduce some side effects of this drink. Supplementing natural essences such as wasabia and s.marianum helps digestion, controls the activity of kupffer cells in the liver, and enhances the liver's ability to detoxify.
