During a recent working trip to the border commune of Ba Tang, we were led by Vice President of the Women's Union of the commune Ho Thi Meng to visit Ms. Mon's cow breeding model. It is known that this is a livelihood model that helps this female member's family escape poverty, awarded by the Provincial Women's Union through the program "Accompanying women in the border areas" from 2022.
“In the early days after moving out, Ms. Mon’s family faced countless challenges, and her children often fell ill. However, with their agility, diligence, and determination, she and her husband effectively utilized support from local authorities, associations, and organizations to gradually escape poverty. Her gentle and approachable personality was also loved by the women in the association,” Ms. Meng commented.
Like other young couples after moving out, Ms. Mon's family's life faced many difficulties. Although she was very diligent and worked hard growing cassava and raising chickens, because of the constant treatment and medicine worries for her three sick children, the family's finances became increasingly depleted.
Fortunately, in 2019, with the support of the local government, Ms. Mon was supported with a pair of breeding goats and trained in raising them. Being a species that easily adapts to the mountainous climate, and being carefully cared for by her husband and wife, the herd of goats grew quickly. From the initial pair of goats, the herd grew to 5-7 goats, at times up to 10-13 goats. The money from selling the goats helped her have more conditions to take care of her children, while also paying off family debts.
In 2022, Ms. Mon's family was once again happy to be supported by the Quang Tri Provincial Women's Union with a livelihood model of 1 breeding cow, each worth 15 million VND, through the program "Accompanying women in the border areas". In the summer, family members take turns herding cows on the grasslands; in the winter, they diligently cut grass and store straw to fatten the cows. Up to now, the herd of cows has developed well, giving birth to 2 more cows, increasing the total number of cows in the barn to 3.
“What I remember most is when we brought the cows home, everyone in the family was so happy, my children kept running in and out, almost not sleeping all night. We appreciate every support from the government, associations and organizations, my husband and I dare not be lazy, we work hard to produce so as not to let everyone down,” Ms. Mon confided.
Currently, in addition to raising livestock, the couple is still growing about 2 hectares of cassava per year. The above-mentioned farming and livestock models bring her an average annual income of about 50 million VND. Thanks to that, in early 2024, her family officially escaped poverty.
Not only is she an exemplary female member in poverty alleviation work, Ms. Mon is also known as the Secretary of the Party Cell of Trum Village. As a woman who is the Party Cell Secretary, it is not easy to propagate to the 11 Party members in the cell in particular and the people of the whole village in general to understand and act accordingly.
