The 56-metre British-flagged sailing yacht 'Bayesian' was anchored about 700 metres from the port with 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board when it was hit by a waterspout during a storm in the early hours of Monday morning.

Fifteen people on board, including a mother and her one-year-old child, were brought to safety but the body of a man, believed to be the cruise ship's chef, was found hours later.

On Tuesday, divers searching for the six people still missing donned oxygen tanks and began diving into the wreck in rough seas, about 50 meters below the surface.

Due to the depth, each dive is limited to 12 minutes, including two minutes for descent and ascent, according to Luca Cari, a spokesman for the fire department.

The passengers on board were invited by Lynch - a tech billionaire once likened to the UK's Bill Gates - to celebrate his acquittal in a major US case.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 people rescued, but the businessman and his 18-year-old daughter were missing, according to Salvo Cocina, head of the Civil Protection Agency in Sicily.

Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, who testified for Lynch in the US case, has also gone missing along with his wife Judy, British insurer Hiscox said on Tuesday.

Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance, who represented Lynch in the case, was also on the boat with his wife.

It is also noteworthy that Lynch's alleged associate in this case, Stephen Chamberlain, suddenly died in a traffic accident in England just a few days before the above mentioned boat sinking.

Lynch, 59, was acquitted of all charges in a San Francisco court in early June after he was accused of $11 billion in fraud related to the sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP).
