The Sorrows of the Former Kings

While Nam Dinh and FC Hanoi are creating an exciting race for the championship this season, the former V-League champions are "sinking" at the bottom of the rankings, among them are teams that have not yet decided their fate of participating in the V-League next season or not?

Former V-League champion SHB Da Nang now only worries about staying in V-League

Harsh playground

V-League may not have created a strong impact on the continent and the world . However, this tournament itself contains the harshest things, which not every tournament possesses. Teams that are slow to change and do not keep up with the times will be eliminated.

Since turning professional in the 2000/2001 season, Vietnamese football has had its first champion, Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA). The Nghe An team continued to win the championship in the 2011 season. However, from a brand of Vietnamese football, with a fiery playing style, SLNA is now just a name, as they only know how to stay in the league from season to season. This is what makes many fans of this team sad and wonder when the old days will come back?

However, Vinh City football fans can still be happy, because at least their team, although struggling, has never been kicked out of the V.League arena. On the contrary, Saigon Port used to be the pride of Ho Chi Minh City football when it won the V-League 2001/2002. But after that, this team disappeared without a trace from the map of Vietnamese football, leaving many fans with many memories.

Similarly, the names that were once famous in V-League, but now play in a "cut your coat according to your cloth" style and find a little hope in the relegation battle, even the former champions have now dissolved, despite the fact that they were once the powerhouses of Vietnamese football. Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Dong Tam Long An (now Long An), B.Binh Duong, SHB Da Nang... once made waves in the professional playing field, and their names are never absent in the race for the top spot. But as analyzed, their task now is to find every way to stay in the league and then think about what to do next...

It is impossible not to mention B.Binh Duong. This is the team with the second most championships in Vietnam (4 times, only after Hanoi Club (6 times). However, in recent times, this team is no longer itself with unstable achievements, even in the 2023 season, it had to compete for relegation until the last round to stay in the V-League.

No longer myself

From a football team with the largest number of fans in Vietnam, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club gradually lost everything. The team's leadership accepted this to create a revolution from the name Vu Tien Thanh. Success has not yet come, but Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club is now a different version than before.

This season, the mountain town team successfully stayed in the league with 2 rounds to play, but Minh Vuong will follow in the footsteps of his teammates Cong Phuong, Van Toan, Van Thanh, Tuan Anh, Hong Duy... and leave to find glory for himself, instead of sticking with a team that doesn't have much ambition.

The names that were once famous in V-League, but now play the "cut your coat according to your cloth" style and find a little hope in the relegation battle, even the former champions have now dissolved, despite the fact that they were once the powerhouses of Vietnamese football.

The saddest is probably Dong Tam Long An, when the team that once made the entire V-League afraid, has now fallen to the first division since the 2018 season, and it is not known when it will be able to return to the professional playing field. Even now, Long An is struggling to compete for relegation in the first division in 2024/2025. Hearing this, fans feel heartbroken.

Meanwhile, SHB Da Nang used to be the pride of Han River fans. The writer witnessed thousands of fans lining up to celebrate the V-League championship trophy that coach Le Huynh Duc and his team won for the first time in the 2009 season.

However, the Han River team then slid down and was relegated in the 2023/2024 season. In the 2024/2025 season, they returned to the V-League, but are now at the bottom of the table and facing the risk of being relegated to the first division once again.

The reason why the former champions are no longer themselves is due to internal resources, including the ability to grasp the times or the lack of economic resources, causing the once-famous football teams of Vietnam to no longer be themselves.
