Dai Hong farmers excited because hybrid corn has high yield

The Farmers' Association of Dai Hong Commune has just coordinated with Advanta Group to hold a field workshop to evaluate the production model of genetically modified hybrid corn PAC999 Super S for the Summer-Autumn crop in 2024. This is a genetically modified hybrid corn variety that has attracted nearly 100 farming households to test-plant in the Summer-Autumn crop in 2024 on a scale of 80 hectares in Lap Thuan village fields and neighboring villages such as Ha Vy, Ngoc Kinh Dong, Duc Tinh...

Participating in the model, people are provided with seeds by the enterprise, trained in planting and caring techniques, and pest management in the fields. The enterprise also coordinates with local authorities and farmers to carry out trial production on different areas of land in Dai Hong commune to assess the actual growth capacity, yield of the variety, and the wide adaptability of the corn variety.

Through the production and testing process of hybrid corn variety PAC999 super S, it shows that corn plants grow and develop well, the tripod root system develops strongly, has good lodging resistance, is resistant to pests and diseases, and is widely adaptable.

Corn can be grown in all seasons of the year, with a growth period of 105 - 115 days. When harvested, the plant has soft stems and green leaves, which can be used as animal feed. PAC999 super S corn variety has leaves covering the corn, high seed set rate, small cob, large kernels, and beautiful grain color.

Mr. Nguyen Hoai Phap (Duc Tinh village, Dai Hong commune) shared that his family grows 8 sao of genetically modified hybrid corn provided by a seed company. Each sao harvests 420 - 450 kg of dry corn. With the market purchase price of about 6,600 - 6,800 VND/kg, it is calculated that each sao of farmers earns a profit of about 1.8 - 2 million VND, after deducting the cost of seeds, materials, and fertilizers.

Mr. Nguyen Hat (Dong Phuoc village) planted 4 sao of genetically modified hybrid corn. He said that although his family's farming techniques are not as good as those of other farmers, the genetically modified hybrid corn still yields 20 - 30 kg/sao higher than the previous corn varieties he planted.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Hien - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dai Hong commune informed that compared to the existing varieties on the market, the above genetically modified hybrid corn variety has a higher yield of about 30kg/sao. Each kilogram of dried corn is sold for 6,700 - 6,800 VND; the profit per sao of corn brings about 2 million VND after deducting some expenses.

"In the 2024 Summer-Autumn crop, Dai Hong farmers planted 80 hectares, with relatively high yields, everyone was excited. For farmers, once they see that the variety brings more profit than the varieties currently on the market, they will definitely invest in planting it," said Mr. Hien.

According to Mr. Le Van Dat - Sales Director of the Southern region of Advanta Group in Vietnam, this is a corn variety that is resistant to pests, disease, and lodging, suitable for coastal areas along rivers. The corn yield is very high, the ratio of kernels to fruits is much higher than many corn varieties currently on the market.

The PAC999 super S genetically modified corn hybrid can yield high yields of 450 - 500 kg/sao. This is a multi-gene corn variety, resistant to 4 types of pests such as fall armyworm, fruit borer, corn borer and armyworm. The variety is evaluated to adapt to climate change, intensive cultivation in most crops of the year, giving high yields of about 85 quintals/ha, if intensive cultivation is good, it can reach yields of 90 quintals/ha. The variety grows in a short time, in the summer-autumn crop, it takes about 95 - 100 days to start harvesting.

"The model started sowing in Dai Hong on May 6, and by August 13, it was 97 days, but when the fruit was harvested, the corn was still green, and the flags, leaves, and stems could be cut to feed livestock very well. The group's genetically modified hybrid corn variety has been officially supplied in Quang Nam since 2023, but the company's seed supply rate is very good," said Mr. Dat.
