Mr. Vu Van Dien's family has 1.8 hectares of Taiwanese guava, earning an average profit of over 300 million VND per year.

Spread

We visited the pear guava plantation of Mr. Vu Van Dien's family in Bung Dua village right when traders had just purchased nearly 300 kg of guava. While counting the money, Mr. Dien calculated that with a selling price of 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, the income still reached nearly 3 million VND per crop. Compared to traditional guava varieties, pear guava is priced 5,000 - 6,000 VND/kg higher.

The above results are impressive because it is not the main crop season, so output and selling price are reduced.

Mr. Dien was the first person to bring the Taiwanese pear guava variety to grow in Tuan Viet commune. In 2013, when he received the transfer of 1 hectare of ineffective production land from the commune, he tried planting 3 sao of apples and 3 sao of pear guava. After a year, he realized that apples only yielded one harvest, while guava yielded year-round and was easy to sell, so he expanded the area.

By 2016, his family's guava growing area had increased to 1 hectare and now reaches 1.8 hectare - the largest in the commune. On average, after deducting expenses, his family earns over 300 million VND per year. Mr. Dien shared: "Growing pear guava is low cost, requires little care, and the trees give a stable harvest for 5-6 years before needing to be replaced. As the village chief, I have encouraged people to switch to growing guava."

Seeing and hearing, many households in Bung Dua village boldly learned from Mr. Dien's model.

In 2018, Mr. Vu Van Teo renovated his garden land to try growing 1 hectare of guava. Seeing the effectiveness, two years later he expanded to 1.5 hectare. Mr. Teo said: "Pear guava is easy to sell, traders come to the garden to buy. The average price ranges from 15,000 - 18,000 VND/kg, each sao yields about 2 tons/year, earning 20 - 25 million VND/sao". Mr. Teo's family earns about 200 million VND/year from pear guava.

From just a few households growing, up to now, the whole Bung Dua village has more than 40 households cultivating this guava variety with a total area of nearly 6 hectares. Each year, the Bung Dua growing area brings in a value of about 4 billion VND, the economic efficiency is many times higher than the previous rice and corn growing.

The guava growing model is also being replicated in other villages in Tuan Viet commune.

Growing Taiwanese guava is not too expensive. Planting once can be exploited for 5-6 years, year-round, high economic efficiency.

The success of the guava pear growing model not only brings stable income but also opens up a direction for sustainable agricultural development in the locality. In 2023, the Center for Science - Technology Application and Variety Testing (Department of Science and Technology of Hai Duong province) transferred techniques for caring for and preventing pests and diseases on guava trees to Tuan Viet people. Techniques such as pruning, identifying pests and diseases, spraying pesticides at the right time, etc. help reduce the amount of pesticides, protecting the health of growers and the environment.

At the end of 2023, Tuan Viet commune mobilized households to establish a Cooperative Group for growing pear guava according to VietGAP standards. The Commune Farmers' Association coordinated with specialized agencies of Kim Thanh district to continue supporting people with techniques, planting and care processes according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. The cooperative group has the participation of 40 households. The growing area is assigned a region code, and the product is VietGAP certified. In 2024, Tuan Viet pear guava was officially recognized as a 3-star OCOP product.

Along with many other agricultural products of the district, Tuan Viet pear guava has been certified as a 3-star OCOP product.

Currently, the product has been introduced on e-commerce platforms, households are also actively livestreaming to sell on Facebook, TikTok... contributing to expanding the consumer market.

Pear guava has been and is affirming that it is a tree with high economic value in the locality. Growing guava not only creates high income for many households but also creates jobs for many workers. In particular, since Tuan Viet pear guava products have been certified as OCOP, people's consumption has been much more favorable; farmers are not forced to lower prices by traders. Now, the product is available in clean agricultural stores and mini supermarkets. The value has been increased, and consumers are also more assured with products with clear traceability stamps.
