Safe agricultural products - potential and challenges

Over the past 5 years, Thai Nguyen people have focused on investing in clean production to create safe products. With over 5,900 hectares of tea meeting VietGAP standards, 120 hectares of organic tea; over 1,030 hectares of fruit trees and 179 farms and livestock facilities producing safe products according to VietGAP standards... Thai Nguyen has a fairly abundant source of safe agricultural products. However, consumption is still a big challenge, especially bringing safe agricultural products to e-commerce platforms.

Safe production is promoted

To date, of the 22,200 hectares of tea in Thai Nguyen, about 26% of the area has been certified to VietGAP standards; nearly 6% is organic. With an average yield of 127 quintals/ha, each year, the whole province harvests over 764.5 thousand tons of fresh tea buds.

Not to mention that most of the concentrated tea production area in the province is applied according to GAP, organic and equivalent standards (about 17,800 hectares), creating a "huge" source of raw materials for safe tea production.

In addition to tea trees, the area of safe vegetable and fruit production has also increased by about 30% compared to 5 years ago. Thai Nguyen has developed a number of concentrated safe vegetable production areas with a total area of 1,220 hectares; over 1,030 hectares of safe fruit trees produced according to VietGAP standards...

Ms. Le Thi Quynh Huong, Head of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management of the province, said: In the past 5 years, the area of safe crop production has been increasing, which means that the output of "clean" agricultural products supplied to the market is increasingly larger.

Safe production processes are also promoted in livestock farming. In addition to 179 VietGAP farms and facilities, the province also has 42 facilities certified for disease-free livestock farming; 1,200 farms and facilities raising pigs and chickens with biosafety, disease safety, and food safety.

Mr. Le Dac Vinh, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries of the province: Every year, Thai Nguyen supplies the market with more than 230 thousand tons of livestock and poultry meat, of which meat output from safe livestock farms that meet VietGAP standards accounts for about 45%.

With a fairly abundant supply of safe agricultural products, Thai Nguyen can fully meet market demand in both quantity and quality.

Applying technology in connection and consumption

It can be seen that the mechanisms and policies supporting the application of science and technology in safe, organic production have had a positive impact on the province's agricultural development. In particular, to bring "clean" agricultural products to consumers, the province has applied digital technology in connecting, promoting and consuming agricultural products.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, Head of the Department of Economic Cooperation and Rural Development of the province, said: Up to now, basically OCOP products of Thai Nguyen have been connected, promoted, introduced and consumed on the e-commerce floors of C-ThaiNguyen, Voso (voso.vn), PostMart (postmart.vn)...

Not only organizing training, all levels, functional departments and localities in the province have coordinated to promote the application of digital technology in connecting, promoting and consuming agricultural products, supporting people to bring safe agricultural products to the Potsmart and Vo So floors; supporting many agricultural production households to open booths and successfully sell hundreds of tons of products on e-commerce trading floors...

Currently, Thai Nguyen has more than 160 thousand agricultural production households that have created accounts and posted on e-commerce platforms with over 2,000 agricultural products.

Through e-commerce platforms, sales of many businesses, cooperatives and households in the province have increased by 20-50%, with online sales and e-commerce platforms accounting for 30%.

Provincial authorities have increased inspections of the quality of agricultural products sold in supermarkets.

The challenge is

Bringing Thai Nguyen agricultural products to e-commerce platforms has opened up many promising directions, giving wings to products to "fly" far to many markets both domestically and internationally.

However, to achieve the best results in product consumption via cyberspace still faces many challenges, requiring efforts from managers, producers and businesses.

In fact, Thai Nguyen's goods sold on e-commerce platforms are mostly dry products with expiration dates (tea, rice noodles, etc.), while fresh vegetables, fruits, and products with basic preservation conditions have not been implemented.

Furthermore, the transportation and preservation of fresh, processed and frozen agricultural products to consumers (vegetables, tubers, fruits, animal meat, etc.) is still very difficult because it cannot be transported via the postal service of the trading floor owner.

Therefore, in order for Thai Nguyen agricultural products to be consumed more strongly, authorities at all levels and functional sectors need to open more e-commerce trading floors; have more mechanisms and policies to support people in bringing agricultural products to e-commerce floors, promoting the development of the agricultural digital economy.

In particular, we should pay attention to promoting propaganda, organizing more training and guidance classes, training in digital skills, how to build packaging, connection, delivery and operation processes for production and business establishments, promoting innovation in buying and selling methods on e-commerce platforms...
