After getting married, although she was not afraid of the hardship of working for hire in many different jobs and harvesting rice in many places, her family life still encountered many difficulties. In 1998, Ms. Huong decided to start raising pigs and has been doing so ever since. “During the process of raising pigs, I always took the initiative to learn more experience and visit pig farms of other households. At the same time, I participated in pig farming training courses organized by the local agricultural sector to gain more knowledge to help raise pigs more effectively. From the first pig, I gradually raised the herd and then built the farm as it is now,” Ms. Huong said.
At first, Ms. Huong also raised pigs in the traditional way like many other households. In 2014, while visiting a cold-house pig farming model in Tra Vinh province with a feed company; Ms. Huong learned more about pig farming and then determined to change the way of raising pigs in the direction of biosafety. Thinking is doing, she boldly asked for drawings from the owner of a pig farm in Tra Vinh province and then sold 14 hectares of land plus her savings to invest in building a biosafety pig farm with a steam cooling system. Up to now, she has invested more than 3 billion VND to build 4 closed pig farms in a cold-house system. Ms. Huong pays attention to environmental sanitation, the farms are always kept clean and airy, wastewater is passed through a treatment system, compost is made into biogas combined with fish farming.
The pig and sow areas are divided, the temperature in the barn is always cool to help the pigs stay healthy, grow quickly, and shorten the raising time. The pigs are fully vaccinated, have good resistance, and improve the efficiency of raising pigs; when buying new pigs, she quarantines them to prevent disease. According to the Agricultural Service Center of Thap Muoi District, in 2019, more than 45% of the pigs in Thap Muoi District were destroyed during the African swine fever outbreak, but the closed pig farm in the cold barn system of Ms. Huong's family was completely unaffected.
Currently, Ms. Huong's pig farm has more than 600 pigs, including sows, pigs for meat and piglets. Each year, her farm sells many litters of pigs; some years, it sells more than 1,500 pigs, mainly consumed within the province and partly outside the province; when the price is right, after deducting expenses, Ms. Huong's family makes a profit of more than 1 billion VND. In addition, income from opening an agency to buy and sell livestock and poultry feed and renting more than 2 hectares of agricultural land helps her family have a stable source of income.
In addition, her family's pig farm also helps create jobs for 6 workers in and outside the locality with a stable income. Ms. Huong regularly helps households in difficult circumstances, actively supports social security work and contributes funds to the construction of new rural areas in the locality. "I am always willing to share my pig farming experience with other pig farming households to contribute to improving the efficiency of farming and developing the family economy," said Ms. Huong.
According to Mr. Bui Van Cong - Deputy Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Thap Muoi district, the closed pig farming model in a cold barn system in the direction of bio-security implemented by Ms. Huong over the past many years has proven effective in practice because it helps pigs grow quickly and effectively prevents diseases. At the same time, the pig herd has a low loss rate, faster raising time, helping to save costs, bringing higher profits to farmers.
With many efforts in animal husbandry, over the years, Ms. Huong has been continuously recognized as a Good Farmer in Production and Business at all levels. In 2021, Ms. Luong Thanh Huong was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for her outstanding achievements in the movement "Farmers compete in production and good business" in Dong Thap province, period 2017 - 2021.
