Failing 10th grade and the journey to break stereotypes about continuing education
What makes Khanh Ly's story especially impressive is that she graduated from the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education (GDNN - GDTX) in District 12, Trung My Tay Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
She also did not take extra classes, only accumulated knowledge through lectures from teachers at school.
Ly shared that these efforts stemmed from a big "stumble".
"Because I loved to play in middle school, I did not do well in the 10th grade entrance exam. Therefore, I enrolled at the District 12 Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center. At that time, I saw that people had many prejudices about the Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center. However, that did not discourage me, but on the contrary, it became a strong motivation for me to try harder," Ly recounted.

With the determination to break down prejudices and the desire to pass the university entrance exam, Ly set herself the goal of studying more seriously. The female student considered her time in vocational education - continuing education as an opportunity to prove that not all students of vocational education - continuing education are "stupid".
From a playful student, Khanh Ly tried hard to recover, joined the gifted student team and won second prize in the city-level geography competition.
"I felt like I had the best grasp of geography knowledge, so I focused on studying, did my best on the test, and got a perfect score," Ly explained.
Khanh Ly’s high school graduation exam results were a well-deserved “sweet fruit”. Her C20 admission combination achieved a total score of 27.75 (not including priority points), including: Geography 10 points, economic and legal education 9.5 points, literature 8.25 points.
When she received the official notification that she was valedictorian from the school via email two weeks ago, Ly still couldn't believe it.
"I felt proud and happy, but at first I didn't think I would be valedictorian. I was afraid that many other students would have higher scores. Even the night before the opening day, I was so excited that I couldn't sleep because I knew I would be honored," Ly confided.

"My parents were very happy. They even watched the live broadcast of the opening ceremony and planned to show off to their relatives. That was my greatest pride," the female student said with a smile.
Multi-talented, energetic girl
Not only is Khanh Ly a good student, she is also an active and multi-talented student. During her 3 years in high school, she continuously held the positions of: Vice-class leader, class monitor, and youth union secretary.
Besides, Ly also participated and won prizes in extracurricular activities, including third prize in Ho Chi Minh City Youth Volleyball Tournament and first prize in Go Vap Volleyball Tournament.
The girl's secret to studying is not studying day and night, but balance.
"Everyone should study as hard as they can, but they should both study and play. They need to be mentally comfortable to be able to concentrate on studying," Khanh Ly shared.
She applies specific time management principles: "I divide my time clearly: spend about 3 sessions on sports , study at home at night, and go to school in the morning. I also take time to rest and limit phone use."
With a passion for learning about people and society, Ly chose Sociology.

"I see that this industry has long-term development potential and is suitable for me. I cherish the future plan of becoming a sociologist or psychologist," she said.
Closing the story, Khanh Ly did not forget to send her gratitude to the place that supported her: "My vocational education school in District 12 is no different from a high school, teaching according to the program of the Ministry of Education and Training very seriously. Teachers always support students."
She especially thanks to the teachers who taught and the homeroom teacher.
“I would like to thank Ms. Tram for introducing me to the Geography team. Especially Mr. Nam, the teacher who wholeheartedly taught me a lot of knowledge, shared study tips and gave me guidance. I sincerely thank the teachers and the GDNN - GDTX District 12 home."
With the achievement of being the top student in the whole school, Khanh Ly received a valuable scholarship from Ho Chi Minh City Open University: 200% of the first year tuition and 100% of the tuition for the following years.
Sharing at the opening ceremony of the new school year, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Ha, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, advised new students to clearly define their learning goals, be proactive, creative and persistent with their study plan.
According to Mr. Ha, in the era of rapidly developing technology and artificial intelligence, learners need to foster a spirit of lifelong learning, always proactively updating and adapting to new things.
Besides, he also encouraged students to constantly improve their skills, participate in extracurricular activities, practice foreign languages and digital skills, because that is the key to unlocking the world's knowledge.
"Success does not come overnight, but is the result of daily efforts," Professor Nguyen Minh Ha told new students.
